Athens city and county leaders accepted appraisers’ $27,500 valuation for the courthouse property. The deal, after a public bond campaign, places the land under city control for schools and parks, with an umpire’s valuation final and discussions moving to bond advisory committees.
The Cloverhurst Country Club schedules its annual meeting Thursday at 5 30 PM at the new clubhouse. Officers for the next year will be elected and matters of importance will be discussed followed by a light lunch prepared by Dr O H Johnson.
Yesterday the county held its regular sale day for property seized by fines or taxes. Mrs. Lula Sykes bought about 40 acres of the J. H. Hardeman place at 19.25 per acre, and a one third interest in the same home place of thirty acres for 500 dollars. R. T. Goodwyn purchased the Vanderay coal and wood yard property for 1180 dollars. Forty five acres of John and Albert King went to T. P. Vincent for 800 dollars, and W. A. Mallory acquired the Reese and Finley Streets corner lot for 823 dollars.
The Banner reports steady housing growth with several new homes planned this week. Builders include Martin J. Abney who buys a Milledge avenue lot for a tea room and home, Will Steadman, Will Griffeth who will erect a ten thousand dollar house, and E I Smith Jr starting a California bungalow on Milledge extension. A Meigs street cottage project by D G Bickers is also under way near J M Rogers.
Atlanta May 7 The state’s cotton crop fate hinges on Georgia weather over the next ten days said Agriculture Commissioner J J Connor If dry spell lasts Georgia could have a fair crop but continued wet conditions may ruin it with only a late winter saving the crop Planting is five weeks behind and some areas have not planted yet He advised farmers to switch to corn and peas if rains persist.
Georgia’s Red and Black pitchers and Bubbles Covington powered a 3–0 victory over Washington and Lee on a wet field. Bowden Brannen and Covington led the hits as Georgia stranded runners and stymied the visitors with Thompson on the mound and stout defense.
Georgia and Atlanta push to relaunch Oglethorpe University with a planned board of 100 to 200 Presbyterian donors. Estimated funds include 200k to 400k from large gifts, plus 150k outside sources and 50k to 100k city subscriptions, aiming for about half a million dollars total. Notables like Dr. C. E. Graham and L. C. Mandeville join. Thornwell Jacobs spoke May 5 in Marietta.
In Athens May brings active court activity. The United States court adjourned in early May. The superior court under Judge C. H. Brand will convene Monday after an April adjournment. The city court opens the third Monday, May 20. Civil filings and criminal cases fill dockets. The grand jury is expected to add substantial business.
Last night the Colonial Theatre offered a clean entertaining program drawing crowds. Miss Cameron sang Dolores That Loving Ray Memories of the Past Senor Don Andonegue played La Palma Cradser Cavaleria Ruff and Wieniawski pieces while the Mangean Troupe of seven acrobats wowed the audience with a top class performance and the reviewer found it well worth patronage.

Avlanta May 7 A rising push for higher teacher salaries in Georgia follows US study showing average teacher pay well below the national $500 yearly average. Many Georgia teachers earn only 200 to 300 dollars annually, prompting criticism from Rep Minter Wimberly who calls pay a shame and urges tax equalization or higher taxes to fund teachers.
