Dr. R A Torrey leads a large Athens campaign with a tent meeting at the YMCA lot corner South Lumpkin and Broad streets. Morning 10 30 and evening 8 45 sermons draw thousands as streetcars shuttle crowds home after services.
The mayor and council held a brief session last night. The treasurer’s report was not ready and several items were deferred until figures from the first tax payment are available. The council adjourned early as members attended a showing of Cabiria at the Colonial.
Georgia trains for a pair of games with Tech in Atlanta at Grant Field Friday and Saturday. Otis Corley nears full form, Torbett shines, Ed seeks to keep his undefeated record, and Tech relies on Senter Bryant in hurling. A Seaboard special train leaves Athens Saturday at 8 30 for $1 50, with a stay over option at $2 00.

Atlanta May 3 The state petition for Leo Frank’s resentencing waits on the case being sent back to Georgia state court from federal jurisdiction. The U S Supreme Court mandate dismissing Frank’s habeas corpus appeal is due by May 19 and then Frank will be produced in superior court for sentencing over the Mary Phagan murder.
Last night at 575 Jackson street B Paul Martin aged twenty four died after a long illness. He was a son of Mr and Mrs B S Martin and leaves four brothers and one sister. The funeral at Corinth church today at 4 o clock. Bill I Arnold died Sunday at 5 pm from acute indigestion aged 54. Survived by wife Azalie and eight children. Funeral at Freeman's graveyard near the city. Mrs S N Ellis died Sunday at Farmington aged 34. Funeral at Farmington Sunday afternoon. She leaves eight children and many friends. Cora Murphy died Sunday near Bogart aged 32. Burial at Hog Mountain GA at 2 pm. Survived by husband C T Murphy, three sisters and brothers Elmer Burrell John Burrell Otis Burrell Hoke Burrell.
A Sunday afternoon hail storm passed over Nicholson and Center in Jackson County north of the city. The storm brought hail and rain but caused little damage. Vestrymen Lawrence Jr and doctors H C White Sylvanus Morris J H T McPherson were listed. canon rules prevented another term.
Berlin and Vienna say German and Austrian forces broke the Russian center in West Galicia, claiming gains from near the Hungarian border to the Dunajec at the Polish frontier. The report notes 8000 prisoners and a possible temporary Russian setback as Austro German forces push toward Ypres and St Julien.
Miss Moria Michael of the State Normal School was elected president of the State Council of Lady Principals and Deans. Miss Eva Pearce became vice president, Miss Gallagher normal secretary, and Miss Smith treasurer. The next council meeting will be in Athens in October.
Secretary Bryan defers predictions on American policy until all facts are in. Investigations may confirm a German submarine attack on the Gulflight, potentially leading to demand for indemnity and survivor compensation. British prisoners’ treatment mirrors that of crews captured on German subs, with some solitary confinement noted. Two Norwegian freighters Laila America and Baldwin and one Swedish steamer Elida were sunk by subs in the North Sea. crews rescued, per London dispatches.
Mr. C. N. Bond of Columbus Georgia, a special representative of the Chero-Cola Co parent plant, in the city for several days. He has visited Athens before and praises the city. He reports business improving across the country.

Mr John Willbanks president of the Athens Typographical Union and longtime McGregor Company worker fell ill Sunday afternoon while inspecting the Milledge Circle house. He was diagnosed with heart trouble or acute indigestion and transported by ambulance to his Jackson street home after a delay at Dan Farrs residence. He was reported to be improving somewhat.
The Athens audience enjoyed Elsie Janis in a special appearance at the New Elite with a second showcasing of The Spoilers starring William Farnum. Extra showings were arranged at the Old Elite to accommodate crowds, with tickets available at both houses.
