Washington reports the government intends to send a small contingent to Europe despite shipping shortages. It remains unclear if troops will be National Guard or regulars, while Allied shipping needs delay immediate deployment.
Professor Strahan at the university trains volunteers in daily sessions on the technical details of military map making. Clarke County votes to call a May 31 election on local school tax after petitions showed signatures well above the required threshold. Beginning yesterday the Gainesville Midban Railway and the Athens and Lula branch of the Southern had mail clerks taken off. Pouches will handle mail for offices along the routes. The change aims to economize as part of a department policy. Clerks Aubry Robinson and L M Hulme were removed yesterday, the first from the G M and the last from the Southern.
News reached Banner of a fatal auto train collision near Thomson Georgia that killed Rev W H Young's wife and sister. His daughter Gay was fatally injured and Dr Young critically hurt. the family’s sorrow shocked the community as friends rushed to Thomson to aid.
The University cadet corps will undergo a one day inspection by officers of the regular army to test efficiency and rank the university among military schools. Captain James E. Ware of the Twenty second U S Infantry arrived from Dahlonega after inspecting N G A C cadets there. He will lead Georgia's inspection and finish by mid afternoon. Ware's regiment is stationed at Governors Island New York returning two months ago from the border where it served five years under canvas.
A Navy list shows Oswald H. Locke of Jacksonville Florida among the crew unaccounted for after the torpedoing of the steamer Vacuum. The report places the commanding officer and Captain Thomas also among the missing.
In Christiansburg Virginia May 1 Professor Charles EB Vawter of Virginia Tech faces murder charges in the shooting of Stockton Heth Jr at Vawter’s Blacksburg home. The state opened its case today recounting the March incident and Vawter was expected to testify tomorrow.
