The case against MPCRARY: bond or jail looms as McCrary and Griffin seek release pending trial. A hearing set for Monday will determine whether McCrary can bond again under Georgia law, and if so the bond amount for Griffin will be fixed by Sheriff Jackson with approved sureties.
Evangelist Snively preached at the Christian church tent on burdens, urging that each man bears own burdens while others share some, and Christ alone bears great sorrows. He called for cultivating a best friend for humanity. Children’s services continued led by Miss Lucille Park, and a Sunday school teachers meeting was announced for 6 pm at the tent.
The Colonial hosts the vaudeville bill Glass-Mates and Classmates presented with stronger staging by Lawrence, adding vaudeville between acts to eliminate gaps. The Athens Ice Company advertises prompt delivery and quality ice with phone contact.
Fears Grocery Company advertises reduced prices on canned goods and other items. Ferndell peaches and pineapple, roly poly pears, raspberry preserves, peeled apricots, oatmeal, salad dressing and household products are listed with sale prices and regular prices. Fresh vegetables and hens are noted as available.
Two more accessions to the Christian church were recorded at last night’s tent meeting. In the ten days of operation the meeting has added thirty three members to the church roll. Also advertised are home grown cabbage ten cents the head and home grown asparagus one cent per bunch from Arnold and Abney.
The Tennessee Volunteers meet Georgia at Sanford Field in a key series game. Dawson will pitch for Tennessee after fanning sixteen Sewanee hitters, opposing Corley or Hitchcock for Georgia. The Georgia lineup is likely unchanged and a strong crowd is anticipated for the 3:30 p.m. start as both teams chase the championship.
The first period of city tax payments closed May 1 after April 15 to May 1. About $40,000 was collected in the latter half of April and more than $14,000 on the final day. Delayed checks over $6,000 arrived May 1. Ad valorem taxes plus business special taxes totaled roughly $90,000 with April receipts about ten thousand higher due to additional taxes.

Atlanta May 1 coroner's inquest concluded. Leo M Frank head of National Pencil Co and Newt Lee colored watchman were sent to the Tower. Warrants issued charging them as suspects in the Mary Phagan murder. Arthur Mulinax released, Gantt discharged, Connolly arrested.
The county grand jury, after recent presentments, signs a statement urging Commissioner John T. Pittard to reconsider his planned resignation. Signed by 21 jurors, the note defends Pittard’s service and asks he continue in office for the county’s best interests. The statement will be delivered to Pittard by M. J. Abney.
Following Prof. R J H DeLoach resignation to head the state experiment station, the Georgia State College of Agriculture reassigns the cotton industry to the agronomy department under Prof. John R Fain. Adjunct Prof. L E Rast leads cotton industry with R R Childs as instructor and L S Watson added. All three Georgians, grads of the college, take duties July 1. The move reflects Georgia College sourcing its staff locally, with praise from the board executive committee for the college’s extension work and statewide support.
Yesterday morning work started on grading for paving Washington Street between Thomas and Jackson. The city plans a $75,000 bond funded program plus normal street expenditures, beginning with the section between the new fire hall and the old fire hall corner due to the new court house under construction.
Miss Annie D. Caster of Charlotte North Carolina executive officer for the southern territory of the YWCA was delayed by a missed train. A new appointment set for this morning at the YWCA parlors at 11 o'clock with the women of the city, including directors and members.

Lige Johnson, about fifty five, was discovered dead in his bed at 248 Arch Street after being missed for two days. An inquest ruled death from natural causes. He was well known, recently widowed, with a daughter in Athens and prior loss of part of a hand. The story notes his end appeared sudden and he had just bought ginger snaps the night he was last seen.
In Athens last night more than a thousand people attended a concert of old time negro melodies sung by thirty performers from Jeruel Academy at Moss Auditorium. Promoters aim to make it an annual event and showcase race music to study the negro in his native song. The program included spirituals and banjo selections, drawing serious interest and lively entertainment from the audience.
Sarah Shelton, a colored woman, was tried in Clarke superior court on assault with intent to murder for stabbing another Black woman near the S A Depot. The jury convicted her of stabbing and the judge sentenced her to $100 fine and twelve months on the chain gang.
An exhibition of a fine collection of pictures will be shown May 13 to May 17 at the College Ave school building in Athens. The event promises a rare opportunity for residents to view the works and see notices will follow as details are announced. Atlantic Ice and Coal Co. reminds customers to expect prompt attention if ice wagons fail to reach them.
Yesterday morning Judge Brand of the superior court granted a charter to the Georgia Mattress Company. Petitioners are Messrs. R. B. Dixon and J. T. Dudley. The company has been active and successful in operation with paid in capital stock of $15,000.
Three young girls who arrived in Athens this week on an adventurous trip were taken into police custody and escorted to a train to Atlanta, ensuring they were safely on their way home.
