Major Cotton Warehouse Fire Hits Athens District
Yesterday afternoon about three o'clock a fire devastated the southern cotton warehouse of the Athens Compress Company below Oconee Street. The blaze, possibly starting from the nearby Negro house or a passing switch engine, engulfed over 500 bales of cotton and damaged the warehouse, with total losses around 40 000 dollars though salvage may reduce it to about 26 000. Insurance covered by non local firms. local companies escaped loss.
