Athens hosts state high school events with about 150 contestants across 3 000 participants from districts. Recitations at 11, spelling at 2 30, track at Sanford Field 4 30, declamation and piano for a 300 scholarship at 8 15. Admission is twenty five cents for the whole series.
Mrs. F G C Peek beloved mother of John and Will Peek of Athens and Cicero Peek of Atlanta died after a fall ten days ago. She leaves husband F G C Peek and five children plus a sister and brother. A Presbyterian all her life, she was active in church and Sunday school and dies at Philomath where she will be buried beside her parents. Rev Mickle to conduct services this afternoon.
Mrs Pearlie Jordan aged twenty died yesterday about 10 am at 415 Foundry Street home of her parents Mr and Mrs W J Smith after a TB illness since last Christmas She was a Baptist member Funeral services were held at Princeton this morning at 10 conducted by Reverends England and Willie Gaye Interment followed at the family graveyard Pallbearers were to convene at Miller Company Undertaking.
The Woman's Missionary Society of the First Methodist church will gather this afternoon at 4 o'clock in the Sunday school room for their meeting.
A white mob seized Tom Allen, a Black man held for assault, from a train near Social Circle, killing him before trial. Governor Brown released a formal note blaming local officials for not requesting militia, while Sheriff Stark defended Judge Brand and said he would have acted if asked. The incident follows previous military guard efforts and raises questions about state authority and civil protection.
A mob of about twelve hundred to fifteen hundred men dragged and lynched a black man named John Watts near Walton after surrounding the jail. Five masked men forced entry, led Watts through the town to the woods, where bullets killed him. Photos of the victim, Tom Allen, circulated streets. Sheriff Collier warned but remaining firm in Jackson county jail.
The friends of Dr J C McKinney report he has been ill but is now better and sat up yesterday afternoon. He is expected to be out in a few days. A tan rain coat and a veil were lost Wednesday night at the auditorium building and can be returned to Miss Annie B Dorsey Hill St.
