Watson addresses large audience on political issues

The crowd of 3,500 to 4,000 gathered at Mossorium for Hon. Thomas E. Watson to discuss foreign missions compulsory education lobbying school books and the senatorial question. He opposed compulsory laws favored free schools and offered free legal services on a test case about the fifteenth amendment. He urged a county unit system in primaries and supported a senatorial primary over legislative selection.

Fire at John Arnold store risks million in property

Yesterday morning a major fire endangered about a million dollars in property as John L. Arnold's store room and adjacent goods suffered heavy damage. Firemen toiled for hours with one rescuer hurt, saving the blaze from spreading beyond the building. Losses include Arnold paints and supplies, L. P. Canning drugs and medicines, and Davis' Cafe near total water damage.

Georgia Educator Woofter Heads Alumni, Plans Move

Dr. T. J. Woofter head of the University of Georgia School of Education returned from Nashville after addressing the Peabody Teachers College alumni and being elected president of the Southern teachers alumni group. The school plans to relocate across town by Vanderbilt property, suspend operations for a year, and reorganize its work during the off year beginning this fall.

Hikers to trek from YMCA for eight mile night out

A large group leaves the YMCA at 3 30 pm for an eight mile hike with supper and pine needle sleeping mats. Participants plan a simple night in the woods with a blanket roll tin cup and toothbrush and a damp earth sleep if rain holds.

City council approves playground funds and sewer plan details

The mayor and council discussed reducing the cotton buyers tax to fifty dollars and referred the issue to the finance committee. They approved playground grants for College Avenue, Baxter Street, Oconee Street, and Nantahaia Avenue schools, funded by the park fund. A street opening project from Hendrix Avenue to Pulaski Street was favored with a budget not to exceed 280 dollars. The chiefs of police and fire were granted trips to national conventions in Rochester and Milwaukee respectively. Public sewer mains on Milledge Avenue and Old Milledge Avenue were debated with assessments set at five dollars per year per vacant lot, or city-financed construction with eventual reimbursement. A bill to incorporate Boulevard area for city stock sale was ordered for publication. The Barry case is set for Monday, the 12th, with attention to King Street.
