A June Richmond report recounts a public ceremony around a Jefferson Davis statue pedestal. Attendees echoed Civil War era loyalties and valued the Confederate leader as exponent of state rights while critics framed the display as honoring the Lost Cause.
James Hh Jones, once Jefferson Davis' body guard and valet, arrived from Washington and joined Confederate veterans in a Richmond parade. He declined a $15,000 offer to reveal the Confederate seal, affirmed his pledge to the trust, and attended the unveiling of a Davis monument as crowds remembered the Civil War era and celebrated reunion strides.
Davison Nicholson Co announces a major June sale starting Monday June 3 to reduce stock with thousands of bargain items advertised in Sundays Banner. The event promises one of the season’s greatest sales, urging shoppers to watch for the sale and save on purchases. An additional notice calls members of the Oconee Benefit Fund to settle an assessment after the death of E A Goff of Augusta, with arrears due and collector J H Mealor at the Athens Foundry.
Last night Lucy Cobb held a commencement concert praised for its classical finish. Miss Sutherland conducted the orchestra with violins, cello, bass, trombone, cornet, drums and pianos. Performers included Miss Sally Hull, Ruth Rore, Miss Louise Abercrombie, Miss Kate Hodgson, Miss Julia and Luelle Brand, Miss Rosa Smith, Miss Annie Kins Davis, and Miss Frances Woodberry with notable solos and rich harmonies. An Alumnae reunion and graduation exercises followed with Mrs Lipscomb delivering the address and diplomas presented by Mr A L Hull.
