Elberton Death Tied to Unknown Foul Play

A prosperous farmer named Smith was found dying on a roadside four miles from Elberton after leaving the town Saturday. His nose was broken and his head crushed. initial heart failure thoughts were ruled out by investigation showing foul play. An inquest concluded death at unknown hands. Smith departed Elberton about 6 pm for home eight miles distant. his horse and buggy returned without him two hours later. His body lay between his home and Elberton.

Gainesville Ga Feb 27 Ben Burton twenty three white man was jailed by Sheriff Crow on burglary charges and as a suspect in the Jack the Shooter terrorizing Gainesville. He was arrested at Toccoa on request of Gainesville authorities. Stolen goods found in his possession and identified clothes link him to local thefts. An accomplice believed located, expected to be in custody by tomorrow night.

Runaway Carriage Sparks City Excitement on Clayton Street

A carriage started by frightened horses ran down Clayton street toward College avenue after a paper blew under their feet. The driver left the horses at the post office and returned to find the runaway looming before him. The carriage was badly damaged but no serious injuries were reported. Later a farmer’s mule team also bolted but was halted before gaining speed.
