Judge Levi Hemerick faced a bold break in broad daylight as a convict escaped from a county camp held him at pistol point in his bedroom. Hemerick used a hammer to disable the thief and secure the pistol before camp guards arrived to reclaim the suspect.
Meigs Mathews thirty four of Athens died at Dr Allen's sanitarium Milledgeville after severe burns suffered when his night shirt caught fire near an open grate this morning. He lingered until nine tonight as family members arrived and arrangements were made to transport the body to Athens. He was a traveling salesman for a large wholesale grocery house and left behind a mother two brothers Vincent and Tom and a sister Mrs George Scott.
Athens educators figure prominently in national conferences. Dr. E. C. Branson of the State Normal School in Athens will lead the Richmond session April 17 18 1913 on the Country Church and rural life. The program covers farm life stability, home industries, cooperative farming, social and intellectual life, and sanitation plus a closing summary of actionable steps for country churches.
Reported burglaries targeted well known African American residents over several nights. Incidents included Sam McQueen’s home, the widow of Mack McQueen, and Dick Harris where the intruder was caught but escaped. Local merchants advertise Virginia Winesap apples and pig hams with contact details.
In the city court Judge West declared he would jail contraband dealers rather than fine them. Lester, colored, pled guilty to tigering and was given six months without a fine. The term notes this is a repeat offense. State vs Ed House ended with a guilty verdict and a $75 fine plus costs or six months. William Nash, colored, was acquitted of simple larceny after being charged with stealing four oak posts. Frank Hill, colored, faced charges.
The jury found the machine tower incident not guilty after a consent dispute at Britonne involving Alex Williams Henry Hawkins Ab Hawkins Tobe Hawkins Hutch Hayes and Horace Mapp. Nick Harris a colored defendant faced alleged crookedness in a male trade as the court recessed for the day. The criminal business will continue this week.

Through Erwin and Co the Speer property at College avenue and Washington street changed hands to Hon. James M Smith of Oglethorpe county. Col. Smith acquired options on adjacent lots and plans immediate erection of modern brick and glass-front business spaces, with more development details to follow soon.
Organizing drives target nearly all worker classes in Athens with unions joining the American Federation of Labor. South regional organizer Jerome Jones has visited recently and will return to advance federation work. Local unions include painters, musicians, and pressroom workers with recent charter requests and member rosters.
The WAU local will operate as a branch of the International Pressmen and Assistants Union of North America and seek an immediate charter from the American Federation of Labor. E G Gary is named president with R H Reaves as vice president and P H Dycker as treasurer. officials were sworn in, with women members noted among the unionists.

Representatives from most encampment lodges of the Odd Fellows in the Eighth district gathered in this city to transact business. Officers were elected for the year with R A Patterson as president and B S Sharp as vice president. The next annual meeting site will be determined in Washington tomorrow.

Ten Washington judges of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows depart early for the fourteenth division eighth district convention in Washington with members from Williams lodge and Glenn lodge joining as visitors and officers expected to attend the session today and tomorrow.

The special issue aims to attract capital, settlers and home seekers to Athens marking a first such effort in many years.
Yesterday morning about 8 o'clock Miss Elizabeth Kittle aged seventeen died of tuberculosis at the Barnett Shoals road home. She was a Baptist church member and daughter of the late J M Kittle. Funeral services were held at 11 this morning from the home with Rev Stone officiating, burial in the family cemetery.
Jerome Jones, southern organizer for the American Federation of Labor, will address laborers Sunday afternoon about 2 to 2:30 at the Odd Fellows' hall. He will discuss the work of labor unions and urges all laboring men to attend, regardless of membership.
