German invasion of Russia continues unimpeded as peace talks falter. Reports from Berlin stress distrust of pacifist motives while Austro-Hungarian leaders voice unease. French gains in Lorraine and American raids in France are noted amid massed German offensives anticipated.
Dr A M Soule federal food administrator for Georgia returned from Washington where he met with Federal Administrator Hoover and state administrators from many states to discuss policy and coordination issues.
The Council for National Defense meeting in the Chamber of Commerce rooms attracted many mechanics and carpenters. The committee handed out blanks for names and work types, with Dozier of Dozier Lumber Co coordinating at Spring Street to enlist volunteers.
The district advisory medical board examined selectmen from Walton county and listed examination days by county groups. Dr. C. N. Sisk, a board member, returned from Atlanta after meetings with physicians from twenty two districts and with Camp Gordon medical officers about service examinations.
Fresh Angel Food Cake and Fresh Lady Fingers headline a Costa's Delicatessen shipment alongside Victory Bread and Rolls made fresh daily. Produce includes spinach beets carrots parsley celery white cauliflower with a Fancy Iceberg lettuce due this morning and Frank's Meats salted almonds peas and potatoes from King Hodgson Co.
The Tobacco Fund for the boys is rising steadily with the Athens Banner noting over a hundred dollars raised by weekend. Contributions listed include J. A. Morton Frances Rowe Joe H Booth Mrs Joe H Booth M D Browning Sloman W M Thomas Kate Simpson J B Wootten J d J Senings Warren Smith S J Ware totaling 356.60 to date.
Clarke County Commissioners will review proposals for maintaining sections of public roads, to be submitted by March 6 1918. Plans, under county engineer Prof C M Strahan, include monthly inspections and a cultivable road machine provided by the county for contractors who may work five to ten miles each, singly or in pairs.
Georgia welcomes Glen Colby as new coach in charge of the baseball team and gymnasium work. He arrives from Ohio with his wife and plans to meet with Prof. Sanford to map the season. Mercer and Trinity games are scheduled April 8, 9, 10 and 11, 12, with additional matchups against Auburn and Georgia Tech being arranged.
A lengthy roster of attendees and buyers forms a social register linked to a large stone distance work project. The note mentions many women with titles Mrs and Miss and lists 3,200 phones, plus promises of improved service and clearer bearing. Mr. Church was recalled to Athens to install systems in army camps at Atlanta and Jacksonville, with contracts incomplete.
