German forces push eastward into Russia along a 400 mile front with little resistance reported. Bolshevik orders urge Russians to resist firmly if Germans refuse to halt hostilities as Allied plans for a stronger war council advance in Versailles.

Secretary Baker returned from inspecting the army camps at Atlanta Macon and Augusta to report health and living conditions satisfactory. He noted decreasing sickness rates clothing adequate and food abundant while harness and minor equipment shortages were being rapidly supplied.
Athens resident learns from Washington that Walter C Wood of Texas was not aboard the Tuscania when torpedoed. The Athens boy listed as C Wood on the survivors list was misread. Officials confirm W C Wood is safe and not among the lost.
Washington reports that over fifty thousand Americans of draft age in England and Canada may be conscripted once the draft conventions signed today by American Canadian and British representatives are ratified by the senate.
The organization of a bankers syndicate to provide a 100 million dollar loan to finance the Cuban sugar crop was announced in New York. The syndicate includes prominent bankers nationwide with a Cuban bank committee to cooperate. Charles Sabin and William Simonson are named managers.

The Our Boys in Frazee Tobacco Fund launches a Washington's Birthday drive to supply tobacco for soldiers in France. The Banner reports 27 contributions totaling over 25 dollars after day one with a goal to raise more for 200 dollars in tobacco, 25 cents buys a week, a dollar a month. Mrs H. E. Martin leads donations including a 27.50 contribution.
New York reports the American Cotton and Grain Exchange will commence May 1 with C. Cooper of Atlanta as president. The firm operates on a spot basis with reasonable brokerage, linking cotton, winters, grain, sugar, silks, and provisions. J. C. Cooper, once Athens business owner and brother of Macon lawyer John R. Cooper, heads the venture, with W. Pierce Jackson also connected. Local relatives hail the project.
The University of Georgia holds anniversary exercises for the Demosphenian and Phi Kappa literary societies in the campus chapel on Thursday evening at 8. Speakers include C Murphy Candler Jr of Decatur for Demosphenian and Robert L Foreman Jr of Atlanta for Phi Kappa, with introductions by W D Miller and L L Brown. Music by the Georgia Quintet closes the program.
The local branch of the Council for National Defense will meet in the Chamber of Commerce rooms this afternoon at 4 o'clock per Chairman H. J. Rowe. Members include J. H. Dozier, T. H. Dozier Jr, T. F. Green, and Madame Joseph Lustrat.
Washington February 19 The carpenters strikes in eastern shipyards ended today after President Wilson's intervention A conference between William Hutcheson president of the Brotherhood Hurley and others of the shipping board and Samuel Gompers led to Hutcheson declining to leave the closed shop question to the adjustment board An additional conference is planned tomorrow to try to settle the differences.
Washington on February 19 reports the administration urged owners and operators of ice making and refrigerating plants to prevent waste and leakage of ammonia amid a national food shortage. The item also notes Mrs. Horace M. Holden and family returning from Crawfordville after several weeks away.

Senator Hugh Price of the Twenty seventh district announced his candidacy for president pro tem of the Georgia Senate to replace Roscoe Peacock who resigned to join the military. Price is described as well liked, young affable and conscientious with many friends in Athens where he spends much time.
The Boston branch of the National Equal Rights League sent a telegram to President Wilson urging a national message on lynching after a mob hanged a Black man near Fayetteville Georgia for attempted robbery and kidnapping. The appeal urges the president to condemn the horrors and set a clear stance.
Mr. E H Dorsey Jr is promoted to first lieutenant in the Quartermaster Department at Camp Johnston Jacksonville Fla He is a University of Georgia graduate and a prominent local business man He entered the quartermasters course at the university and afterward joined the service at Jacksonville camp He is the son of Mr and Mrs E H Dorsey of this city.
Victor L. Dennis of Detroit, a cadet aviator, died in Dallas today after his plane fell from about 100 feet and he suffered extensive burns. The accident occurred near Dallas as he was operating the aircraft.
Washington reports say the Bolshevik government agreed to sign a peace with harsh German terms including Polish and Lithuanian retention, Riga and a large indemnity. Officials note Lenin and Trotzky feared the regime’s fate without popular support for peace.
Walter H. Bishop has returned from Chicago and other western points after inspecting large automobile truck and tire factories. He made connections with leading manufacturers and spoke of bright prospects for business and strong demand for his industry’s output nationwide.
Federal agents in New York join a country-wide search for Karl Wilcklens, an enemy alien who escaped from an internment camp with Ferdinand Kube on Christmas Eve. Wilckens arrived in the United States eight years ago under orders of the German general staff.
General Pershing reports that four American soldiers were slightly wounded in action on February 12. None of the wounded were southerners.
Geneva dispatch reports the German crown prince telegraphed German airfield leaders to congratulate London on the hundredth air raid. The Associated Press notes the telegram was sent from Cologne with formal congratulations to the air units.
