The city explains bond plans to add school rooms and streets, noting a 1912 property digest of 9 667 531 and a seven percent debt limit. With 435 000 already bonded, Athens could issue 676 000 more, leaving a margin of 66 000 after proposed 275 000 school and 75 000 street bonds. Banner backs conservative financing for Athens and its residents.
Special to the Banner. Atlanta, Feb 20. Hearst launches a new morning paper in Atlanta with the Atlanta American debuting tomorrow. The eight page issue will sell for two cents as other parties threatened to publish under the same name. Hearst wired its start today to beat rivals.
An Ambier Ohio visitor, a decorator by trade, came to Athens Georgia to wed his fiancée on Mitchell Street. Rev Willie Saye officiated last night with the bride’s family and close friends present. The couple planned to depart for the north soon after. A new plumbing company advertises prompt steam fitting and plumbing services with phone number 1022.
The Journal reports Bunty Pulls the Strings at the Colonial in Atlanta for a final performance. An Edinburgh Glasgow company stars Dawney McNaughton and a strong cast as the witty farce unfolds with Scottish atmosphere and charm.
By order of President Erwin the Chamber of Commerce held a city hall meeting to receive the hospital committee report. Four members favored the report, three opposed. a motion to table carried twenty to five, and the session adjourned.
Demosthenian and Phi Kappa plan a February twenty first 1913 celebration in the College Chapel honoring their anniversaries. Orators include Thomas J. Lance and Edward Morgenstern with masters of ceremonies H L Rogers and Charles B McDaniel. Invitations issued by E L Floyd W B Ingram Gus York and Edgar L Pennington Calvin George J R Wood.
The case of McKinney versus the Athens Railway and Electric Company occupied the city court all day yesterday before Judge West. The dispute is hotly contested and expected to extend into today, after which the calendar in the Banner will resume. The criminal docket shifts to Monday as Solicitor General 8 C Upson prepares to clear jail and docket.
Professor J M Pound president of the State Normal School leaves today for Hampton to speak at a Washington birthday rally and then heads to Philadelphia for the National Education Association meeting. Superintendent G G Bond of Athens city schools will also attend the NEA gathering, described as the association’s most important division. The NEA will meet in early summer.
President Frank Garrison of the University of Georgia senior class calls a meeting in the chapel this afternoon after the regiment drill on Herty field. He warns of startling business and asks every member to attend.
Kell Potts, a well known young man, was found not guilty of the murder of C. R. Harper in May last. The jury deliberated about twenty minutes before delivering the verdict at 8:05 p.m. Potts’s aged mother wept with joy as the decision was announced. Potts had been a student at the University of Georgia.
Last night about 11 at the corner of South Lumpkin and Warsaw Streets a twelve year old boy named Arthur Thomas was shot in the leg by a companion during a rifle play. The load tore through his leg and two physicians worked through the night to stop the bleeding. The article also lists seed potatoes and lettuce for sale by Arnold & Abney.
A called meeting in Athens discussed a petition by physicians and citizens urging a vote on issuing bonds up to 100000 for schools and 75000 for street improvements and delaying hospital bonds. The council adopted a resolution opposing hospital bonds, voting to proceed with separate elections and publishing notices for the school and street bond election.
