Weaver Bridges son of James Bridges endured a painful accident when a fishing line snagged his hand and a hook pierced the flesh above the barb. After companions failed to remove it, a physician in the city pinched out the hook to relieve his pain.
The Clarke county regular court term will open Monday with civil cases dominating the docket and a few criminal matters. Clerk E J Crawford prepared a full case list for calendar setup while Judge West planned a bar meeting to draft the calendar, which was canceled as many lawyers will be away on business.
Special agent W H Ramsey of the Justice Department has spent two days in secret meetings with Col F C Tate and a stenographer at the U S district attorney's office in Atlanta. The inquiry into the investigation of a former official has drawn noted interest from federal building observers amid dense secrecy.
Involuntary proceedings filed against Bostwick Manufacturing Company of Bostwick Georgia. Creditors include B H Malcolm and Bro Van Winkle Machine Company and Adams Millis Company North Carolina. Proceedings held yesterday before Judge F L Upson. Assets about 70 000 liabilities 100 000.
The ninth grass fire of the year drew both Athens fire halls to a lot on Milledge avenue near Baxter street shortly after noon. Residents and crowds watched as firefighters worked to control the blaze, a common sight in summer though the site was often a house, store, or other wooden structure rather than a residence. The rapid response aimed to save property, furniture, and lives, as crews battled the flames.
The state tuberculosis sanitarium will be built near Mt. Airy, Georgia at an estimated cost of $100,000. Solomon & Co. of Atlanta prepared the building plans which the sanitarium trustees accepted. Construction to begin in a few weeks. The site was purchased along the Southern Railway at a high elevation. Officers for the coming year were elected: Chairman T R Whitley, Vice Chairman Dr Jefferson Davis, Secretary Dr M F Carson, Treasurer Dr Joseph E Orme, with Capt W G Raoul and T B Tinsley on the executive committee.
The Athens Railway and Electric Company petitions to be incorporated for 101 years as a street and suburban railroad in Clarke and Oconee counties. It plans an 18 mile route in Athens with extensions to Barnett Shoals and other counties, plus power generation and electric service rights. Capital stock is $1,050,000 with up to $300,000 preferred stock and authority to condemn land for rails and power lines.
Clarence Meeks a young white man from Atlanta was arrested on a Seaboard train in Athens by local police at the request of Elberton authorities. He is wanted for larceny in Elberton for taking a purse and money from a party there. He was escorted back to Elbert County to face the charge.
Seventy three applicants took the government exam for Clarke County and Athens census enumerator posts. Eleven passed. six colored and five white. No women applied. There are nineteen places to fill in the city and county. A new examination or importation of nearby qualified workers may be arranged. Census questions on nativity will be published, and Census Day is April 1. More specials will outline enumeration data to be gathered.
Crawford Few, a colored man, was arraigned before Judge West in Clarke city court on using opprobrious and abusive language after he directed a few ugly words at a Greek man. He was assessed the costs in the case.
Yesterday in city court Grant Eberhardt was tried before Judge West on a charge of wife beating and abandoning his minor children. The court nolle prosequi the case upon payment of $20 costs by the defendant. The surrounding text also mentions Odd Fellows meetings and local advertisements in Athens Georgia.
J W Caskey, contractor, lifted about three hundred pounds of metal and lumber to aid theater work when a heavy box rolled onto his right hand. A nail pierced the palm near a finger bone. Surgeon treated him. blood poisoning risk cited, but recovery expected with disability to use the hand for a period.
Georgia overwhelmed the Atlanta Athletic Association in Atlanta on February 16 with a 57 to 45 victory. Peacock scored 15 and Forbes 24 of Georgia’s total. Doonan and Hudson led Atlanta. The game showcased superior training and fast, skillful play from the Georgia five.
