Yesterday afternoon Eliza Hubbard, about sixty, escaped certain death when flames enveloped her clothes while washing on her yard behind Barber street. Sallie Middlebrooks throttled the blaze by wrapping damp clothing around Hubbard and rolling her on the ground, though she suffered burns on both hands. Hubbard was hardly burned, thanks to swift aid.

Fire dept responds to blaze in vacant tenement
A fire alarm from call box 17 sounded yesterday evening at about 6 30. Firefighters arrived promptly and subdued a small fire in a vacant tenement house where the roof suffered slight damage. The cause of the fire is not known.
