A reader describes rapid construction at Barnett Shoals on the Oconee, where the Jim White Power Company works to finish a dam and harness river waters to power a large Athens factory. The project, aided by a natural island and bank protections, promises widespread employment without harming residents or property.
The mayor, H. J. Rowe, declares skating on city sidewalks forbidden from February 3, 1910, aiming to protect pedestrians as older children use skates bicycles and wagons on sidewalks. Violations carry penalties under the law.
State Treasurer and Bank Examiner Pope Brown asked Georgia’s 497 state banks to submit their financial condition as of January 31, matching the currency comptroller’s schedule for national banks. Nine banks have been added since the start of the current period.

Savannah dispatch reports taxidermist W J Hoxie will transfer his collection of Chatham county birds and animals to the University of Georgia. An option exists, likely transfer in early spring, with price undecided. Hoxie preferred Savannah to retain the collection but sees the University as the proper home. The collection now sits on Ball street ground floor awaiting possession.
Mr Locklin opens a new meat market at the corner of Baxter and Bloom Hell streets. He has long been in the stock business and aims to run the market to suit local patrons, offering guidance on cattle and market goods.
The Athens based company reports assets of 1.11 million dollars with no capital stock. It lists dividends and uncalled scrip over 125 thousand, a reserve for reinsurance near 189 thousand, and surplus close to 800 thousand. Income from premiums rentals and interest exceeded 200 thousand, while expenses and scrip redemptions were just under 180 thousand. Insurance in force nears 36 million with the top risk at 10 thousand.
Georgia's agricultural leaders urge farmers to boost cattle production to curb meat costs and boost land values. Commissioner Hudson says state has strong cattle potential but many farmers still rely on outside meat sources. Wright notes weekly $750,000 spent on western meats and cites a modern Atlanta packing plant plus fertilization benefits from cattle farming.

University trustees plan an official residence for the Dean off campus. The Lucas home will be moved about two hundred feet southwest to fit campus improvements designed by C. W. Leavitt. Work begins soon and is to be completed before May 1.
Hackenschmidt versus Sentell boxing card delayed from Tuesday to Wednesday at Athens Athletic Club. Main event features Hackenschmidt, renowned New York light weight, and Jack Sentell of Atlanta in a fast six to eight round bout. Colby traveled to Atlanta to finalize plans for the evening and future matches as locals await the ex Georgia athlete’s return to the ring.
Vestry of Emmanuel church heard Prof. C. M. Strahan of the University present plans and specs for a new parish house and Sunday school rooms. Estimated cost about $5,000. The building aims to be elegant and well suited to its use. A general parish meeting will review the plans, with work likely to begin in early spring.
Charles Stephens Fellows and Rosa Virginia Richards were quietly married last evening at the bride's city home. Fellows, with the Athens Engineering Company, is well known and has many friends who celebrate the match with happiness.
In a campus scramble the Freshmen snuck to two special rail coaches and forced the Sophs to a distant banquet, capturing President Peacook and other leaders. Freshmen were later pinned with red caps before being released, signaling a likely end to the annual class scraps at the university.
Athens girls shine at Brenau College Gainesville where Susie Cohen and Addie Noll take parts in Conservatory and School of Oratory recitals. Noell to graduate piano with BM next May, and a student to appear with Mr Page in Merry Wives of Windsor on February 14. Georgia Club members number over one hundred. Dr. George B. Wager, longtime First Baptist pastor of Mobile, Alabama, will deliver the Badalal-Teac sermon at Brenau in May.
