A fire in the Crawford W. Long Infirmary Friday morning threatened the officers block used by the A T C unit. The blaze spread quickly but was checked by the Ore department and firemen led by Chief McDorman. No patients were present and damage is estimated at five to six hundred dollars.
President Wilson reviewed American troops at Langres on the Tangres Plateau southeast of Chaumont this afternoon in a pre arranged program. Accompanied by Mrs. Wilson, he returned to Chaumont and boarded a special train for the north coast where he will embark for England.
Helena dispatch reports statewide prohibition taking effect at midnight December 31. The feature saloon era fades as taverns close, but many venues shift to soft drinks, lunches, bowling alleys, or shooting galleries. Barkeepers, gamblers, dancers, and bands fade from the frontier scene, with many workers retained in new roles while breweries adjust operations.
A stated communication of Mount Vernon Lodge No. 22 F A M will be held Thursday evening at eight o clock in the hall on the thint floor of the Max Joseph Building. The anniversary of St John the Brancellot will be observed and the installation of officers for the ensuing year will take place. Bro Robt J Travis Grand Master of Georgia Masons will preside. Paris December 26 Associated Press reports that all belligerents have accepted President Wilsons fourteen points and that only interpretation remains. Von Bernstorff the former German ambassador told Matin that Germany will support the presidents program.
Warsaw dispatch reports Russian prisoners returning through Poland appear tainted by Bolshevism and seek food, while Bolsheviks exploit the penniless flow of released prisoners. About two million prisoners in total are involved, with the first thousands being gathered for the army.
The State College of Agriculture will readmit former students who served in the war to the regular course without interruption. Dr. Andrew M. Soule wrote to undergraduates urging them to return, arguing education is essential for national service and future prosperity during postwar readjustment and industrial growth.
Special to Banner reports Washington December 25 crop experts from the U S department of agriculture say northern states have large cabbage and onion crops this year. New York and Wisconsin store cabbage and expect a 22 percent rise over 1917. Onion crop in 14 northern states shows 1 129 000 bushels more than autumn 1917. Southern growers should plan acreage with these supplies in mind for 1919 harvest.
A blaze in the Segara building on Road Street yesterday morning caused heavy damage from fire and water. The three story block housed mercantile stores and orders on the second floor with a negro pressing club at the front. Firefighters and residents fought to save the building and its stocks, with only water damage on the first floor. The fire started in the pressing club, marking the third fire in a week in Winder.
Washington reports the capital issues committee of the treasury will suspend operations on December 31 and stay inactive until dissolved unless recalled. The committee and Secretary Glass warn the public against worthless securities and stress the need for continued strict economy.
The War Department lists Georgiana casualties including Henry B. Si Went of Watkinasile who died of disease. Also noted are Set. Froyd Welborn Harwell wounded, Lani A. AvEtiIo Tai PonGeese severely wounded, and Martin Lxtill of Walnut Grove Waiktsa County wounded in action.
Danielville Ga Dec 25 another killing in Madison county at Neese. Tull Ramsey hired Johnnie Gunnells to move his family from Ramsey home to Rogers for a Christmas tree. On return Ramsey cursed Jehonie Hardman, a witness, and Gunnells protested. Ramsey followed Gunnells to Neese and resumed abuse. Ramsey fired at Gunnells. Gunnells shot Ramsey twice, killing him. Gunnells surrendered to the sheriff claiming self defense. witnesses say Ramsey was the aggressor. Hearing to follow once warrants and committal trial are ready.
Washington December reports from the American Red Cross national headquarters show an enrollment of nearly 17 million on the Christmas Roll Call. Officials expect the total to exceed twenty million as chapters in other areas have yet to report.
Director Forbes outlined a single day drive to redeem pledge stamps in Athens on Friday, December 27. Three workers will convene at 10:00 AM at the Y M C A on Lumpkin Street to begin soliciting redemption while Forbes’ organization expects a strong local response to boost government support.

He cites influenza challenges and urges school room upgrades, remodeling, and better building plans with state support, plus Traveling Institutes to save time.
Mrs H D Dunn of Fairfax died yesterday at her home after a brief illness. She was married to H D Bunn, well known in Athens, and was a daughter of Capt T H Dozier. Funeral arrangements will be announced later with interment set for Waycross Saturday. J H Meners and T H Dealer Jr and other relatives travel to Fairfax for the service.
Manager Funkenstein endorses the comedy A Pair of Sixes for a Colonial performance tonight. He notes the troupe is stronger than any he has had in prior runs and calls the production one of the cleverest comedies this season. He urges theatregoers to attend.
TaGrange Ga December 25. Dr Henry R Slack president of Troup County Medical Association reports his son Dr Harry Slack a prominent Georgia physician and Johns Hopkins faculty member now promoted to captain. He graduated UGA 1908 first lieutenant, Johns Hopkins 1912 medical degree, studied in Berlin, joined Johns Hopkins faculty, served with American Red Cross in France, volunteered for Mexico service, attached to Johns Hopkins unit, went to France June 12 1917, later served with French drive on the Aisne, commissioned captain November 20 1918.
Hoover finishes a survey of conditions in liberated Belgium and reports wide varying destruction to cattle, hogs, horses, and steel industry. The food administration plans shipping 180000 tons monthly including clothing and seeks additional tonnage. Mount Vernon Lodge, F and A M, will host Hon R J Travis Grand Master of Georgia Masons who will address the lodge in Savannah.
Washington Dec 26 County agents in Texas are launching a campaign to interest local growers in raising cane and sorghum for syrup. They have already taken orders for nearly 1000 tons of cane for planting and aim to standardize syrup grades across central and eastern Texas, centralizing production and labeling.
New York December 25. The American Sugar Refining Company announces a Christmas gift of life insurance to 10 900 employees. Policies range from 500 to 1000 dollars based on service length, with 3 months tenure receiving 500 and longer service receiving higher coverage up to 1000 for five years. The plan supplements the company’s pension scheme and reflects strong concern for worker welfare. President Earl D Babst highlights pride and loyalty as outcomes of the gift.
U S Department bulletin says 15 to 16 million pounds of Smyrna figs imported yearly may be replaced by homegrown fruit in the US. California and southwestern states are suited for fig production, with 10,000 acres planted in the central San Joaquin Valley since the war. Caprified Smyrna figs yield more per acre and fetch higher prices, while Adriatic and Mission figs are also grown for home use. If caprifigs are supplied, Smyrna-type figs can be profitable in four years.
The funeral service for Mrs Bossi Mae Johnson who died yesterday at her residence will be held today at Prospect church near Lawrenceville. She is the wife of Mr Chero Johnson and survived by an infant daughter two brothers and three sisters. The body will be transported to Lawrenceville this morning at 7:03 for the funeral and interment.
