Postmaster General Burleson urged government ownership of telephone and telegraph systems in a letter to Rep. Moon. He claimed the transfer could occur without public treasury funds via a 25 year amortization from savings under state control.
Citizens living outside the city of Athens must pay twenty dollars per hour for Athens fire department services at a burning building. Civil Service Commission decisions aim to protect taxpayers while ensuring firefighting presence beyond city limits. The fire chief may deploy crews outside the incorporate area if needed, with payment clearly required at the stated rate.
The Civil Service Commission warns that despite wartime changes some applicants travel to Washington without formal government job offers. Examinations will continue for likely vacancies, but eligibility does not authorize travel to Washington without a proper appointment from an authorized officer.

Miss Florence Atwell dies after an eight to ten day influenza illness in Atlanta. A nurse at the Atlanta Registered Nurses Club, she spent hours visiting patients and aiding the sick, then joins relatives in Athens for burial in Macon. Funeral services set for Patterson's Mortuary chapel at 11 am with interment to follow in Macon.
Hartwell Georgia December 16 Julian M Peek the first Georgian injured in overseas action from General Pershing's forces is back home recovering. He lost a leg in the Toul sector on November 20 last year and now walks with difficulty while visiting his father Judge Z B Peek. Local shoppers are also noted in a grocery advertisement for paper shells Brazil nuts dried figs dates and fresh vegetables from Arnold Abney.
Nearly three hundred members of the National Woman's Party parade by the White House with torches and banners and burn copies of President Wilson's speeches. They protest the Senate's failure to ratify the federal suffrage amendment as police guard the event.
Mr C H Arnold Jr announces his candidacy for the senate from a new district. The election is set for January seven. Arnold is a long time resident of Clarke County and well known in Ogiethorpe County with many relatives and friends in Wilkes.

With Premier Clemenceau present the four powers Britain France the United States will discuss terms over a session likely to exceed two days.
The Department of Agriculture forecasts the 1916 17 winter wheat crop will top eighty million bushels more than any prior harvest. Planted on forty nine million acres, near perfect conditions may push total grain output beyond a billion bushels if spring wheat is normal.
