Washington August 20 government control of the coal industry moved closer with the appointment of Robert S Lovett chairman of the Union Pacific as administrator of the transportation order. The president will in a few days appoint a coal administrator to direct production and distribution with authority over rail and freight movements. No successor name is indicated.
Associated Press reports no general strike by construction workers and harvest hands in the northwest. Industrial Workers of the World leaders did not carry out orders. swift military action against James Rowan and others influenced the situation. One exception: in Spokane at St John’s eighty men refused to work in the fields.
Governor Campbell condemned deportation of strikers in Bisbee by the Loyalty League and opposed alleged IWW actions. He said deportation without law is unjust and labeled strike sympathizers tactics as a stench in the nostrils of decent Americans.
At the Oglethorpe county courthouse yesterday there were reports that Tom Irwin a leading planter shot a Negro man during a Sunday night fight on his property. Two Negroes argued a dangerous knife appeared and Irwin fired fatally injuring the assailant though reports say the victim was alive late yesterday.
After court session, Clarke county exemption board, with Sheriff Walter E. Jackson and Clerk Elmer J. Crawford, reviewed 29 draft claims. Of the afternoon batch, four were disallowed, three of them Black and one White, including Fred Jones, son of a widow, and others listed with dependents as grounds for exemption. The record notes the claim numbers, names, serials, dependents, and signatories on the third affidavits.
Lord Cecil told Parliament that Entente governments will hold a conference before replying to the Pope’s peace proposals. The U S State Department expects only view exchanges, not a premiers gathering. America will not join due to time. No shift in the president’s peace stance is indicated.

The Athens city court suspended regular civil business to the November term due to wartime duties. Judge Henry S. West and Gen. C. Thomas ordered the civil cases and bonded criminal cases carried over. Three men, War Gregory, Harry Stokes, and John Henry Matthews, were fined $35 each for drunkenness. Gregory’s vehicle was loaned without consent.

The move follows a dispute between Secretary Daniels and League officials. Robert Thompson president of the league directed gifts to be sent via Mrs James Frazier in Washington. Messrs W G Griffeth M J Abney C D Flanigen and Jake Bernstein with a driver depart for a highway scouting and inspection tour through South Georgia. They represent the Athens Chamber of Commerce good roads committee noted for its enthusiasm practicality and tireless work for better roads.

Buffalo, August. Jay and Richard Mead burned to death today when an anti plane caught fire in the air. Both men were dead as the aircraft fell to the ground. Wall was training for aviation service and was the head instructor.
At a Athens Bar Association meeting in the city court room the group voted to honor soldier members soon to leave for service. Judge Thomas led the proceedings as 8:30 PM banquet at Georgian Hotel is planned with the Athens Bar as hosts and a program featuring lawyers freshly commissioned.
Logan county sheriff James Taylor and Judge J N Edward face vigorous federal prosecution. Berry Miller US attorney says the charges include affidavits alleging Taylor promised voter exemptions to men who would back Edwards and other candidates in the primary.
Washington August 20 The Shipping Board seeks about a billion dollars for shipbuilding to support the new construction program. Contracts for ships are expected to be awarded soon as part of the overall plan, with a total nearing one half a billion dollars.
