The U S government plans to keep the country out of Europe’s conflict. The president appeals to Americans to avoid any act or word showing partisanship. Congressional leaders from all parties echo the call as cabinet discusses cable and wireless censorship decisions.
Berlin reports indicate the Japanese ultimatum has been delivered and dispatches show a Japanese-German war is not unlikely. Japan’s Berlin minister asks for Ambassador Gerard to be ready to assume Japanese interests in Germany.
President Wilson received a long message from Emperor William via Ambassador Gerard, expressing Germanys gratitude for US good offices. Germany argued it mediated Austria and Serbia amid Russian mobilization, while White House denied protests over American press attitude.
The Athens Chamber of Commerce held a strong gathering despite wartime and vacation absences, with President Erwin, Secretary Heidler, and leaders like T Warren Smith and Alexander Rhodes in attendance. The group adopted plans for state conventions, gas rate hearings, and rail changes, praised Haselton for coordinating a major barbecue and legislature visit, and discussed boosting the summer school and possible L N railroad shops in Athens.
Washington reports McReynolds will be nominated by President Wilson to fill the late Justice Lurton’s Supreme Court vacancy with a likely quick Senate confirmation. T. W. Gregory to succeed McReynolds as attorney general, a Mississippi native and Texas citizen since 1885, based in Austin.
Judge Nash R. Broyles of Atlanta seeks a Court of Appeals seat with three-fourths of Atlanta lawyers endorsing him. A UGA graduate and former Recorder, Broyles is praised as fearless and upright and is pursuing votes from Clarke County voters who backed him two years ago.
Georgia voters face a pivotal choice for the Rail Road Commission with Hon. S Guyton McLendon highlighted for his ability and duty. The Athens audience is urged to back him due to his ties to the city and commitment to local interests.
The famous five part play Brewster's Millions with Edward Abeles as Monty Brewster opens at the Elite today. First reel at 10 a.m. Admission 5 and 10 cents. Also Friday shows The Perils of Pauline. (Adv.) Clarke County Bank updates small borrowers.
Clarke county voters start early polls at the county courthouse Athens time 7 30 am to 6 30 pm for the Democratic primary and delegate selection to the state convention in Macon September 1 1914. Election news and official ticket appear on the next page with county precinct lists and poll details. Lights on statewide results will be posted on Clayton street and in the Banner tonight with final returns tomorrow morning. The paper notes a single shot voting rule for legislators and that two or more votes will invalidate the ballot.
The Banner invites Athens residents and visitors to a late night Returns Party on Clayton street opposite the M and W with a big screen flashing election results. Special telegraph service by Mr. Ross and Ellison Stone will relay bulletins about governor races senatorial contests state officers and congressional contests as fast as the wires deliver. A wide audience is urged to gather for live updates and the paper promises comprehensive coverage over the wires with improved service.
The city court session is canceled for election day. A jury found S. K. Goodman guilty of larceny after trust and he faces one year in jail or a 250 dollar fine plus costs. Whit Willingham pled guilty to carrying a concealed pistol and was fined 50 dollars or eight months. Victor Innes was arrested near Eugene in the Nelms case. Warrants for Innes and his wife were issued in Texas.
