Secretary A W Brooks mails a notice to all members of the Athens Chamber of Commerce announcing the regular monthly meeting on Friday at 8 30 pm. The call urges every loyal business member to attend to discuss city interests and upcoming matters of importance.
Dr Ignac J Hopkins, after four years as pastor at the First Methodist church Mithinelty, will assume the pulpit at a Presbyterian church. The change marks a shift in clerical assignments as the congregations await his sermons and leadership.
Dr Hopkins a distinguished Methodist minister and scholar returns to Athens to preach at the Sunday eleven o'clock service at Athens First Presbyterian. Once pastor of the city’s First Methodist, he remains in declining health but his visit offers friends a chance to hear him again.
A new cafe at the corner of College Avenue and Broad Street features ice cream soda and candies under the Commercial Hotel. P N Chiliv prep suggests skipping cake baking for an “Old Fashioned” treat. Fines for eating Arnold and Abney.
Special to the Banner from Oconee Heights August 10. A rare bain storm swept this county area after departing Athens. Severe winds toppled fences and outbuildings. A barn on the Gillen place collapsed with a Negro, a mule, and a cow inside. none were hurt. Two big oaks fell, one crushing the front gable. Crops suffered hail damage with about a quarter of cotton and corn harmed. cotton stalks stripped and leaves, limbs, and bolls torn on larger plants. corn fodder stripped.
Yesterday morning Mr. T A Smith assistant to Clerk Crawford learned from the man with whom he had been pasturing his cows that lightning the evening before had struck and instantly killed a valuable cow belonging to Mr. Smith. The animal valued at seventy five dollars was one of the finest milkers near Athens. The pasture near the Crawford barns in Barbersville was struck and burned in the same storm.
A filing in Clarke County superior court asks for a charter for Lipscomb Realty Company to operate in Athens with founders Frank A. Lipscomb W H Bishop and Fulton A Warner. Capital stock 26000 with standard increase rights. Principal office in Athens with branches possible. Business plans include real estate collecting and loan operations. The petition notes the founders are prominent local businessmen with long experience in insurance automobile and investment fields.

The Georgia House passed a $20,000 increase for University of Georgia maintenance in Athens, with other Athens related appropriations likely to follow. The capital report notes support from Rep Hooper Alexander and signals passage of additional funding for state sanitarium and agricultural institutes, amid broader budget actions in the session.
Last night the mayor and council held their regular meeting. Appeals by Inman Gray and Northcutt for speeding were heard. Gray paid a $50 fine, Northcutt’s case was dismissed. Two cases against negroes for whiskey possession were postponed. A Foundry Street water overflow petition was referred to officials. A county roller purchase for $1500 was approved. Funds for a new school for negroes in Newtown were approved. Sewer extensions on North Milledge Avenue were funded by property owners. Pavement collection on Hill Street was ordinance. Meeting adjourned to Monday 8:30 pm due to time.

Mr. BR L Tribble reports heavy hail destroyed forty acres of cotton expected to yield forty bales per acre. He estimates only about five bales salvaged and notes stalks stripped clean with leaves and bolls on the ground. Other local crops, including Jarrell Wingfield Goodrum and Phinizy places, also hurt. Jarrell barn roof damaged.
Atlanta Aug. 10 Judge David W Meadow of the Northern circuit appeared before the judiciary committee and withdrew his objections to placing Franklin county in his circuit taking it from the Western. The committee will recommend passage of the act and the bill will pass. Brand of the Western will then have one less and Meadow one more county. Effect on Franklin voters' view of him is unknown.
Mrs. A B Hudgins aged over seventy is dangerously ill at her Springdale Street home. Relatives and friends hold faint hopes for recovery. Hudgins family includes Thomas Hudgins Weston Hudgins Mrs John Carlton and Miss Janie Hudgins. Judge A J Cobb returns from Jefferson after summer term of Jackson superior court.
Mrs. Sarah A Butler aged seventy four died yesterday after a five to six month illness at her residence 23 Summer street The long afflicted survivor of a large family she leaves eight children and several siblings Funeral will be at 2 pm from the residence with interment at the old Coll family burying ground near Hull Madison county Pallbearers named Frank Bowden George Collins W V Parnell L D Beaton E P Stone H D Merritt The deceased was noted for Christian character and devotion.
Mrs Laura Huen widow of Seaborn Huen died yesterday afternoon at her Thomas street home after a long illness. Born in Newberry South Carolina she moved to Athens years ago. Surviving son Seah Huen a Thomas Street merchant. Funeral at First Presbyterian Church with pallbearers named and interment at Oconee cemetery.
Hemrick descendants of John and Polly Hemrick gather at Princeton factory in the county for a reunion. Many generations expected including children grandchildren and possibly great grandchildren. Mr and Mrs Hemrick moved from North Carolina about sixty years ago.
Due to urgent engagements in Atlanta, D. D. Armstrong and W. R. Fraser did not meet Athens officials yesterday to discuss operating the Glidden route through Athens. A return visit by Fraser and Armstrong is possible this week, with a strong city council and chamber committee prepared to urge Athens as the route, aiming to bring the event to town next fall.
Chicago August 10 Chairman Butler of the American Automobile Association announced the Glidden tour will run October 15 25 as the year s greatest motoring event. The 1 369 mile route starts in New York and ends in Jacksonville with a stop in Atlanta on October 21 22. The route honors southern progress in road building.
The Atlanta legislature authorized the Ault committee investigating the state department of agriculture to hire expert accountants for a thorough audit of the department's books. The review will extend into vacation periods, with results not available at this session.
The county ordinary received a marriage license for Louis Cutler and Getal Norence, both of this city. The ceremony was performed by Rabbi J. M. Lewis of Atlanta. In the officiant's return the spellings changed to Getel Worinsky and Louis Kutler, yet the couple remain happily married.
J J Butler of Augusta travels to Athens after the death of his mother here last evening. He is here today due to family loss. Meanwhile local grocery specials include snap beans at 10 cents per gallon and large fresh tomatoes at 25 cents per dozen from Mansey & Skelton.
