Taxpayers flocked to City Hall to settle the second installment and receive receipts. The crowd was heavy enough to keep the clerk at the desk late, with many paying Saturday and yesterday. Marshal Brooks expects few defaulters, signaling broad satisfaction with the installment payment plan.
Hundreds of friends gathered Sunday at the Baptist church to honor Mrs E B Mell as Dr E M Poteat spoke of her Christian life. Florals filled the service and cemetery rites closed a tribute to a loving wife mother daughter sister and community figure.
Photographer Bowden and Mrs Bowden spent the days at St Simons with the Rifs encampment. They traveled by Sparks' automobile to the coast and returned to Athens by rail. On the return trip today they will be joined by Tate Wright C E Smith and Roy Strickland.
Sunday morning at the home of Mr and Mrs W H Smith on College avenue a fifteen month old babe overturned a can of oil and lit a match. Flames rose in the kitchen as the mother heard cries and crawled through the blaze to save the child. She was scorched and used water from the faucet to extinguish the fire in minutes.
Harvey Howard told police he was beaten by four negroes after visiting various businesses. Officers doubt the story, suspect he harmed himself or misnamed attackers, and instead confined him for cursing and a profane tirade.
Capt. Rucker reports Ty Cobb wowed Athens crowds during a Philadelphia trip with Detroit and Philadelphia games drawing 70,000 in attendance over two days. Tigers pitching noted as Detroit’s weakness. Police and mounted officers guarded gates as 200 officers tried to manage the crowd. 16,000 more were turned away each game for lack of space.

The Legislature made the Augusta Medical College an integral part of the University of Georgia, under its jurisdiction in Athens. Geo Craft, a Black man, was bound over by Judge Young for chicken theft. He was observed by S A I special policeman Norris near a trusfle with a bag. the bag held confectionaries. A prior case involved whiskey in a similar sack. The hens had broken necks and were identified by two Black women owners after a struggle late Saturday night.
Mr. Ed Stone of the Elite motion picture theaterium returns from trips to Birmingham and Atlanta. He praises a new theater Ward is building on Peachtree in Atlanta at the old Nunnally candy store site, a $60,000 project he calls the finest in the South.
Rev. W. H. Layton a traveling preacher living at 500 Foundry Street seeks work. He needs funds to support his ill child requiring constant maternal care and is willing to do any honest labor including carpentry or handyman tasks to earn a living.
Messrs Carlton Beussee recently with Rome in the Southeastern league and C Peeler long an amateur pitcher for Athens went to Gainesville to join Commerce for a three game series from Monday to Wednesday. They are expected to boost the Commerce lineup with added strength.

Special to the Banner Detroit edged Philadelphia in ten innings by six to three to claim the fourth game of the series. Detroit trailed early but tied it in the ninth and drove in three runs in the tenth to seal the win. The Royston Georgia peach delivered a three RBI triple in the final frame as fans watch a fifth game today.
The joint committee on the state department of agriculture organized with Senator Bush as chairman, Senator Ault as vice chairman, and Senator Harris as secretary. They decided not to hold star chamber sessions and adjourn subject to the chairmans call. The probe is unlikely to finish in the remaining session days and may resume after adjournment.

The temperance committee voted two to one in Atlanta to recommend passage of Representative Tippins's bill prohibiting sale or giving away any drink containing more than 0.5 percent alcohol. The measure would remove near beer saloons and many patent medicines from stores. A licensing alternative for beers was defeated. Supporters call for a decisive prohibition push, while opponents warn of practicality and enforcement concerns.
The most popular girl at Summer School will receive a watch in a drawing at the Majestic Theatre tonight at 9:30. Votes poured in by the hundreds by late yesterday and a surprise awaits readers who attend to see who wins.
The second Mutt and Jeff series plays at the Lyric today in a comedy titled The Bag Half Dollar. The cartoon, adapted from the popular Jeff spending the bad half joke, is by the Nestor company with exclusive rights to Mutt and Jeff cartoons. Watch for them every Tuesday.
The Georgian Barber Shop run by Hilley and Jones has moved from the Georgian Hotel lower floor to the ground floor at 268 Jackson Street opposite the Georgian. The new mirrored room is modern and up-to-date with full equipment and expert staff. The old space will become hotel sample rooms and patrons are invited to visit the new quarters.
