Clarke County grand jury reports after spring term 1913, noting auditor audits of county officers, payment of bonds, and need for stricter notary and justice charges. They urge compulsory education, address near beer violations in Athens, and call for stronger pistol control to curb gun crimes.
Georgia baseball opened its tour with a 9 to 3 win over Michigan A and M. Left fielder Ginn homered with bases loaded in the second. Morris pitched well and Bowden made a superb one hand catch but injured a eye. Corley to start at first tomorrow. Hitchcock to mound.
The second Georgia Tech game of the season is set for Saturday at Sanford Field just after the Memorial Day parade. The Yellow Jackets seconds clash with the Georgia reserves as the Red and Black aim to repeat last week's win in Atlanta and the young Jackets seek revenge. Management hopes for a large crowd after a loss reported last week. lineups are not yet announced, but both teams are described as strong and ready for a good game.
The Lawrence Players revived Polly of the Circus with polish and vigor. Audiences enjoyed the circus girl, the Minister, the clown and gossips, a return engagement equal to traveling company standards. Upcoming bills include The Virginian and Classmates at the Colonial. Cabbage from Florida and Anderson Brothers advertise phone 476.
The court opens with the W O Roberts theft case against Singer Sewing Machine Company funds, to be followed by DeLaney versus Hull, Exchange Bank matters, John Carl Booth, and motion calls. Yesterday Claude Herring was acquitted of cruelty to his seven year old, while John Potter and Ford Smith cases may move to the next term.
Jos. F. Negreen offers $75 for 1861 Gold Dollars with Dahlonega mint mark D and $2.50 to $25 for other Dahlonega coins, plus $15 for 1854 $3 gold, and Confederate stamps. He invites postal inquiries from Athens residents, noting the old mint building near the University of Georgia as a hint of locality.
Georgia declares Memorial Day a legal holiday with Athens at its center. Banks will be closed all day tomorrow as on other holidays, so customers are urged to settle deposits, notes, and other business today. Saturday will see unusually heavy banking activity as patrons prepare for the holiday. Anderson Bros. advertises fresh lemon marmalade and phone 476.
A fine high school game is planned on Sanford Field this afternoon with admission described as a bargain. Athens High School faces Elberton High School in a likely hard fought contest. Elberton’s battery is Smith and Harper while Athens fields Wilson Costa Weatherly Bend Hutchens Michael OFarrell Hollingsworth Hooper in the lineup.
The Clarke county grand jury completed its term yesterday morning and returned seventy five true bills covering offenses from rape and assault with intent to murder to misdemeanors such as carrying pistols being intoxicated on the highways and stealing chickens. A number of indictments were not recorded due to insufficient evidence to warrant a true presentment.
The gospel tent at the Christian church drew the largest crowd yet as Rev. Mr. Snively preached that God is Love and that salvation comes through church support. Six new members joined the church this week, and 97 children attended the prior day’s service.
Friends of Commissioner Walter G. Cornett praised him yesterday morning after the arrival of a baby girl at his home on The Heights. The event brought well wishes from neighbors and local associates.
Senator Toombs Dubose urges creation of a state commission to study taxation and propose equitable reforms. The letter from Athens dated April 24 1913 supports Lipscomb's bill to establish a board of state equalizers and proposes gathering data with attorney general and comptroller general assistance.
J. K. Wells, once a gun superintendent, admitted guilt for shooting his wife in their Oconee street home and wounding Dr. M. F. Mathews who came to help. He claimed delirium and unconsciousness at the time. The solicitor will not press the wife assault case. a misdemeanor fine is expected, and Wells shows changed conduct since the incident.
No impromptu debate will be held tonight at the University chapel despite rumors. The event, once a major Georgia gathering in February, has been postponed to a later date, likely one evening next week. De mostrenian representatives include H. T Singleton and others. Phi Kappa members are E. B. Denlap and colleagues. Mr. Henry West will serve as master of ceremonies.
Members must pay an assessment due on the death of Mrs. J. F. Foster at once. Pay or leave payment with W. J. Smith & Bro or to J. H. Mealor.
Local commandery No. 14 invites all Sir Knights to attend a scheduled Friday evening meeting. Members are urged to be present for the assembly and business.
The freight depots of the city including Southern, Sabine, Gainesville Midland, Central of Georgia, and Georgia Railroad will be closed all day tomorrow Memorial Day. Regular Saturday 1 PM closings are suspended for the holiday.
Yesterday the superior court for divorcees saw only one case proceed Mamie Millson versus Ed Mills. The case was opened tried and granted with proceedings recorded. The rest of the term included multiple cases but only this divorce was completed.
