A Washington dispatch reports the United States has been officially assured by the new Russian government that Russia will not negotiate a separate peace with Germany or Austria. Allies express relief, while socialists reportedly urge brothers to overthrow monarchies rather than concede peace.
In federal court the Himmelberger Harris case leads the day’s docket with the lumber giant contesting the government’s right to condemn lands under the forest preservation act. The matter resumes today along with minor revenue-law violations. J. W. Chancey received a three year sentence for using the mails to defraud and will be returned to state court to face forgery charges.
The funeral for A. V. Deadwyler will be held at 11 o'clock this morning from The Heights on Mitchell's Bridge Road, with Dr. Belk and Dr. Lynch officiating. Interment in Oconee cemetery. Pallbearers and honorary pallbearers named. Deadwyler survived by wife Lena and four daughters. He was a Jackson County native, longtime stock dealer, farmer, Elk, known for loyalty and charity.
Contributions continue for a city wall lot flag to fly over the watertower with electric spotlight service at night. A youngster gave a dollar and others pledged funds, bringing the total to 28.50 with previously acknowledged gifts from Laura Anne Phinizy and C. C. Steelman among others.
Washington April 18 The Weekly Review reports farming conditions backward across the country with unfavorable season and slow germination in southern districts. It notes improvement in winter wheat in Kansas Oklahoma and in the Ohio Valley and east central districts while predicting a short winter wheat crop. Labor shortages and high seed prices curb potato increases as Secretary Houston urges more corn production calling it America's most important cereal.
New York April 18 Madame Sarah Bernhardt aged seventy one is in a critical condition after yesterday's operation. She toured the South recently and telegrams of sympathy and hope for her recovery pour in from across the United States and around the world.
Police pursue a colored boy about grown who is accused of stealing many items from the home of former Mayor W. F. Dorsey where the boy was employed as a servant. A pistol jewelry and silver were among the missing items. He fled in a white servant uniform and has not been seen since. Items belonging to the employers were found in his coat pocket.

A large crowd attended a memorable school event at Princeton last night directed by Miss Wood and county agent Miss Oliver with University of Georgia help. Students entered singing Glory to Old and the building was decorated with dogwood and honeysuckle blossoms as Dr. Arrow, Prof. Odum, and Glee Club performed among other numbers.
Georgia fans face a sparse schedule with multiple cancellations including Trinity, Virginia, and Vanderbilt. Only remaining games are home against North Carolina A and M, Clemson, and the 23rd 24th matchups, with a 3 30 p.m. start today. Coach Henderson cited a delayed Southern train causing the late start.

The Clarke County Superior Court adjourned yesterday afternoon to reconvene next Monday with two judges in two rooms. Judge West will preside for Judge Cobb who is disqualified in several civil cases. Cobb will try a mix of criminal matters. John Kinderland, colored, faced trial for larceny from a young white man, but the jury ended in mistrial after a daylong session. Corrie Davis, an ex preacher, colored, was found guilty of burglary and sentenced to ten years for theft from a Jewish synagogue and the First Methodist church on the same night.
Prof S V Sanford named from the Eighth District attends the first defense board meeting in Ataata with Gov Harris presiding. The board, with twenty members present, plans no immediate expansion of National Guard units until the current brigade reaches peace strength. A county constabulary is proposed, an alien census for Georgia will be taken, and the State Food Commission met with Dr A M Soule of this city attending. A joint session urged immediate actions for food production and conservation, with a statewide meeting to be held in Macon next Tuesday. Local ads for produce follow.

Reports from the French and British fronts claim gains and captures, with Russian advances also noted. A historic Commons resolution matched in the Lords, praising American involvement.
