From Birmingham and Montgomery reports on April 8 193? indicate slow returns but clear results. Underwood leads Hobson for the Senate by roughly 30 000 while Comer trails Henderson in the governor race with a face off likely. Clayton leads for Congress by over 3 000. L C Brown a Athens Coca Cola Betting Company president and Clarke County businessman announces for the August 19 primary. He pledges to serve Clarke County to the best of his ability and asks Democratic voters for support in the coming election.
The Retail Merchants' Association will meet tonight at 8:30 at Martin's grocery store corner Clayton and Thomas streets. Members are urged to be present as important business will be transacted. All retail dealers in the city are invited to attend.
A special Georgia Railroad train runs from Union Point to Athens drawing visitors from nearby towns to the trade day events. Merchants expect a large crowd and welcoming displays as the University of Georgia faces Michigan at Sanford Field. Georgia previously beat Michigan 2 to 0, and today’s game is anticipated to be closely contested.

Albany April 8 Governor Glynn refused the clemency appeal of five Jewish clergymen seeking a stay of execution for four gunmen convicted in the Herman Rosenthal murder. The condemned face electrocution at Sing Sing Monday. The clergy argued Passover would be marred otherwise and noted Frank Cirofici’s alleged absence from the shooting.
Rumor says Mr Harry Sitner, once a top dry goods and dress goods specialist in this city, may relocate back to Athens to settle here again. Friends anticipate his return will be welcome news.
A fire at Winterville yesterday morning destroyed the Pittard Coile mercantile building housing the Pittard Coile Company and Pittard Banking Company. Losses include stock valued at 318,500, fixtures 2,000, and building 5,000 with only 2,500 insurance on the structure and 14,500 on fixtures, totaling about 25,000. The bank vault protected funds and records. plans to rebuild are under way.
