Easter Island Story of Grotesque Stone Statues

A vivid description from Churchman portrays Easter Island as a deserted land in the Pacific with about 200 inhabitants and 600 carved stone figures weighing ten to twelve tons on average, some forty tons, set on long platforms around quarry craters. The statues’ volcanic origin and unfinished forms are noted, with crowns carved from different rock in another crater.
