Death follows collapse during Ashland football game
Max Newsom son of Dr and Mrs G S Newsom former residents of Athena Weston and Freewater died Saturday night at a Medford hospital after a football game collapse. He had been warned exertion could prove fatal but played on. He died of cerebral hemorrhage after a two week high blood pressure and kidney disease. He is survived by parents and younger brother Gale of Klamath Falls.

Auto Crash Kills Senator Kirkman
Colfax near Colfax. State Senator Colfax Walla Walla Kirkman died in a Tuesday morning car wreck on a state highway. His mother Mrs Isabel Kirkman was slightly injured and other relatives suffered shock and cuts as the car pitched down an embankment en route to Spokane. The senator, about 60, was a long time holdover figure in Washington politics.

Mrs VanWinkle Killed In Automobile Wreck
Mrs. Luther VanWinkle, a former Athena resident, died last week in an automobile wreck at a street intersection. Mr. VanWinkle was seriously injured when their car was struck. She was buried in Walla Walla, with a daughter to accompany the remains from California. The VanWinkles had visited Athena last August and formerly lived there. Mr. VanWinkle, a photographer, ran a gallery in town.

Collision on Main Street Damages Two Idaho Cars
Two automobiles with Idaho plates collided on the wet upper Main street Monday evening. A touring car slowed and was hit in the rear by a roadster. The touring car suffered minor damage while the roadster was wrecked in front with a bent axle and broken spindle. A woman passenger sustained slight injuries from broken glass.

Drunk Farm Hand Fatally Shot by Rancher in Self Defense

Death connects two Portland sisters in double funeral
Announcement said Mrs. G. W. Proebster Sr. of Weston died at her Portland home. Her sister Mrs. Effie Olive Gardner 72, longtime business school teacher, died Saturday in Portland after shock from Mrs. Proebster’s death. Born in Maine she lived in Boston before moving to Portland forty years ago. The sisters had lived together for years and a double funeral was planned at the Unitarian Church on Monday.

Hunters Return From Idaho Trip With Elk and Deer
Back from an Idaho hunting trip Fay LeGrow Sam Pambrun her man Geissel and Everett Rothrock returned Sunday. They enjoyed ideal weather and brought home elk and deer meat in splendid condition. John B. Yeon Oregon Road Builder Dies at 63
John B. Yeon of Portland, a key figure in Oregon road development and former highway commissioner, died Monday night at age 63 after an illness and operation. Born in 1865 in Plantaganet Ontario, he rose from loggers to a lumber businessman and later funded and built roads including the Columbia River highway, leaving a Yeon Building in Portland. He arrived in Oregon in 1885 with $2.50, built wealth by logging, then retired in 1906 to devote himself to roads.

Ernest Sandy, 2, of Walla Walla, died in a hospital after being dragged from a burning overturned truck on Base Line road. Burn injuries from the blaze followed a gasoline ignition after the vehicle overturned as he allegedly fell asleep at the wheel. Hunters Return From Selway Traverse With Elks And Deer
A party from Athena and Grangeville Idaho including F. L egrow Sam Pambrun Herman Geissel Everett Rothrock Frank Pettibone and James Geary spent three weeks in Selway National Forest Idaho. They bagged four elk and six deer and distributed meat to friends. The expedition used twenty seven head of pack animals and established camp on the Clearwater river near the forest extending to the Montana line. The trip featured favorable weather and noted trails and scenery in the vast forest.

Guerneys in Chicago News Receives From Mr and Mrs Guerney
Mr and Mrs Philip Guerney now reside in Chicago. Mr Guerney was struck by a passing motorist while getting from his car and thrown to the pavement. He was rushed to a hospital and did not regain consciousness until the next day. He sustained severe bruises but no serious injuries. Mrs Guerney works in a lucrative position with A C McClurg Publishing Company of Chicago.
