Wheat markets were mostly steady to higher last week with rye improving on export inquiry and firm positioning. No. 2 soft wheat in St Louis hovered around 1.48 to 1.49 per bushel, better than a year ago but below last spring. Global bread grain supply similar to a year prior. northern hemisphere wheat up about 5 percent while rye declines offset gains. Southern hemisphere crops look brighter, though old stocks fall about 30 million bushels. Demand may rise about 5 percent amid a poor European potato crop and small corn.

The Umatilla Dairy Improvement Association reports Umatilla County dairy cattle lead Oregon in butterfat output for August. The Somermer herd of Hermiston posted the highest herd average, 54.1 lbs of butterfat from seven Jerseys, while 49 herds averaged 25.5 lbs fat per cow and 602 cows averaged 577 lbs milk. Numerous herds and individual cows across Hermiston Freewater Irrigon Pendleton Stanfield and Adams posted top fat and milk figures, with multiple cows producing over 40 lbs fat and several over 70 lbs fat_successful members include G. Grant County Deer Hunters Take Bucks Early In Season
The Grant County hunting season produced several bucks for local hunters. Frank Williams and Fred Beckner each shot one buck in the opening period.
