The Oregon Railroad and Navigation Company asserts ownership of the city water tower and adjacent vacated streets north of the railroad, delaying Fourth Street improvements. Officials expect a likely settlement without court action as city and company negotiate boundaries and access.
A local update notes onion prices rising to 60 cents per hundredweight due to scarcity in the Walla Walla valley and Northwest demand. It forecasts a finish to fruit and vegetable movements in the next 90 days and apples likely sold by November. The report lists cases including Basil Parr horse theft Maxwell v. O R N damages larceny and forgery cases involving Richard Ryan and others.
Papers filed in Walla Walla transfer the right of way for a ditch fume and pipe line on the Little Walla Walla River to the Oregon and Washington Power company. The land water right moved from T. J. John G. Myera, veteran Toland Empire pioneer credited with proving wheat could be grown on foothill soil, died Friday at his daughter Mrs. Wm. Piper’s home west of town. Born in Virginia in 1820, he married Elizabeth A. Davis in 1848. Survived by children Thos Myona Marsell Pendleton Sumpter Piper Helix and Mary Barnes Pendleton. funeral held Saturday conducted by Rev. Armfield.
Heroes of Heppner flood Lesley Matlock and Bruce Kelly were hosted by Heppner Ione ties in a banquet at the Zone hotel. Mayor Reid opened, J A Woolery spoke, and the pair gave brief addresses thanking the appreciative sister city audience.
Mrs. Egiline Stevens of Baker county near Geiser underwent a delicate operation at a Sumpter sanitarium and is on the road to recovery. The Athena May Hive Ladies of the Maccabees have raised funds through the First National Bank of Sumpter to meet medical expenses as grand officers report a favorable condition for her illness.
New barbwire telephone switchboard was installed this week at McBride Co. Palace Drugstore in Athena. Seven lines now operate in and out, including the McLean High line and Adams line. Three more lines can be added, expanding service to all local districts and farms.
Helen Norte the Pacific Northwest’s fastest three year old trotter prepares to race in Walla Walla during the week of October 1924. Judge Brents has entered his fast horse in pacing and trotting events and Helen Norte will be on hand. Reduced rail rates and strong entry list promise a major meet for harness fans.
