Bureau of Standards Proves Practical Accuracy Failures
Reports from the Bureau of Standards show surveyors’ chains and measures vary from exact norms by inches, affecting land disputes and city contracts. Noted cases include Philadelphia court challenges over chain accuracy, Brooklyn boundary fights, and a milk measure dispute. The agency plans new laboratories costing about a quarter million dollars to enable more precise testing and better standards across weights, measures, and instruments.
