Extra Session Planned To Fix Tax Payment Law

In closing days of the legislature a bill was rushed through to change tax payment timing. The law lacks this year’s tax provisions, prompting an extra session to remedy the defect. If not for a referendum case before the supreme court, an emergency could enable immediate enforcement, but current law bars levies within the time. Umatilla county would face little impact from a levy absence, debts could be paid by warrants at 6 percent, and officials hope to avoid higher costs. Mortgages totaling 171, worth nearly a quarter million dollars, were fully satisfied in one day at the county recorder’s office.
