Man Killed In Lane Dispute Over Shared Road Rights

Mike Ryan, jailed after a Thursday shooting that killed Edward Dix on a farm lane and wounded Jacob Schubert, claims self defense. He says Dixon and Schubert pressured him, Dixon tried to grab the gun, and Ryan fired to prevent beating. Schubert and Dixon had been contesting access to a diagonal road crossing Ryan's field. both men were unarmed.

Artesian well project eyed for Athena area

Wilson of Athena Land & Trust travels to Walla Walla to secure a drilling expert for an artesian well near Athena. If feasible, the company may sink a well at Athena’s location or use the existing deep well to supply a reservoir by gravity. Prof. B. E. Klemm is named to organize Athena High School to begin shortly after his Walla Walla arrival.

Prince of the platform to lecture at Christian church

Victor Dorris, a nationally renowned orator, delivers Man in the Brightest Limelight at Athena Christian church next Tuesday night. Admission is 26 cents for adults and 10 cents for children under twelve. The church promises a high quality program and urges all to attend at eight o clock sharp.

The events mark possibly the last commencement at Weston with baccalaureate services in the chapel and an alumni banquet in the gym. Tuesday evening featured a formal program with music, readings, solos, and addresses by Benj. W. Curry, Judge Stephen A. Lowell, and Lillian J. Holman, culminating in diploma presentations by President Robert C. Frear.

Fined in Recorder's Court for Saloon Dispute

Obas Grant of the Corner joint was fined $10 by Judge Richards Tuesday after a saloon dispute with Ed Rush over allegations of a report that Grant had been run out of Helix. Henry Wood testified for Rush while Bill Taylor and Walter Bannister figures appeared in a drunken fracas tied to the case. The hearing stretched into Thursday with no further action. meanwhile, Eight Grade Examinations in Athena saw Worthington, Parker, McFaydee, Winslow, Campbell, Gholfon and others listed as participants.

Caledonian Picnic Draws large Oregon Gatherings

Umatilla County Caledonian Society plans its tenth annual picnic in Athena on Friday and Saturday June 4 and 6 with a grand park dinner, balloon ascensions, baseball, Scottish songs, bagpipe performances, and appearances by notable pipers and performers. Weston hosts its fourteenth annual Pioneer reunion with a festive program for visitors and locals alike.

Athena Band Leads Umatilla County Picnic Spectacle

A large turnout attended the Farmers Educational and Cooperative Union picnic in Athena. The event featured performances by the Athena band and local singers, plus speeches by Dr. Campbell James Johnson Alva Shumway D G Kirk and others. Despite cold weather the program ran smoothly with parades, musical numbers, recitations, and a notable aerial stunt by Ouen Cannon.

Local Woman's Christian Temperance Union Organized

A new Woman's Christian Temperance Union chapter formed in this city with 21 charter members. The first meeting on May 14 elected officers: President Mrs H Hill, vice presidents from Baptist and Christian churches, secretary Mrs Ryder, treasurer Mrs Motte, and superintendents. The next gathering is set for June 18 at Mrs Brooks' residence in the northern part of town.

The Milton general committees on arrangements set June 8 as Milton's annual strawberry day after careful review of the spring conditions. The decision followed caratal consideration of prevailing conditions and urges community participation.
