Gala donation picnic concludes as Athena hosts large crowd

The eleventh Umatillo County Caledonian society picnic closed Saturday evening after a strong turnout in Athena. Portland entertainers impressed crowds at the concert, and judges and locals delivered addresses. Field events saw McEwen and Payne Athena win multiple races and jumps, while Major James K. Thompson of the 16th Infantry was buried with honors in Arlington. Also noted were E M Smith’s planned move to Crook County for a wheat ranch and favorable regional stock conditions.

Tamp Osborn in Jail After Stabbing Credited to Temper

Tamp Osborn a well known pitcher in the Washington State Baseball league is jailed in Lewin county charged with second degree assault. He allegedly stabbed Fred Nehring captain of the Chehalis team three times on a Northern Pacific train last Friday night. Nehring’s wounds are not serious but he will be out for two weeks. Osborn was captured in Pacific county after a 12 hour woods chase by Sheriff Stevens. The Chehalis team was bound for Raymond when the incident occurred.

Athena Triumphs In Blues Mountain League Baseball

Athena defeats Pilot Rockers 8 to 1 in a league game while also beating Weston 6 to 1 and Adama 10 to 8 in exhibition play. Picard pitched strongly for Athena, limiting Pilot Rock to a single run as Lobaugh and teammates supported with solid fielding and timely hits. The Blues Mountain standings and local stock moves conclude the report.

Fire Blight Threatens Walla Walla Valley Orchards

An epidemic fire blight endangers apple and pear orchards in the Walla Walla valley. District Fruit Inspector GC L Whitney and veteran orchardists warn urgent action is needed as spraying proves ineffective. Old trees may resist, but the disease can wipe out whole orchards or require years to recover, with outbreaks recurring every decade or more.

New O R N Trains On Washington Division Schedule

The O R N introduces trains No 5 and No 6 on the Spokane Portland route with new schedules. Train No 6 to Spokane arrives 2 50 pm and No 5 to Portland arrives 12 60 am. Pendleton Spokane day train times shift with No 8 at 7 40 am and No 7 at 4 10 pm. Walla Walla Portland line trains arrive 8 am and 6 pm respectively.

George J Cameron Runs for Governor at Caledonian Picnic

At a Caledonian picnic in Portland a forenoon program announced George J Cameron, Multnomah County prosecuting attorney, as a Republican candidate for governor. Frank Hennessey of Portland made the announcement. Cameron attended but did not appear on the platform to verify the candidacy. Cameron has long been a Portland figure and formerly served as police judge.

Alumni Banquet Set by Eastern Oregon State Normal School

The Alumni Association of Eastern Oregon State Normal School announces the annual banquet in the girls dormitory dining room on Saturday evening May 38 at 8 o'clock. All members and friends are invited. The banquet will be hosted by the Mountnorth League at 75 cents per plate.

Vocals and piano lessons announced by Pendleton residents

Miss Ruppe of Pendleton will teach vocal music at Mrs. Anna Selkirk Norton’s residence in this city alongside Miss Hubbard of Walla Walla who will organize a piano class. Lessons begin Tuesday May 31 and Saturday June 4. A recital by the young ladies is planned next Wednesday evening at the opera house in conjunction with Mrs. Norton. Ralph McEwen, recently at the Howton School of Technology, has accepted a position with the United States Government reclamation service at Klamath Falls.
