Benjamin Crocker Dies at Tacoma After Illness

Benjamin David Crocker, long tied to business interests and a prominent Washington politician, died at six Sunday evening in Tacoma from Bright's disease after a lengthy illness.

Caledonian Picnic Opens With Athena Events

The eleventh annual Kone Scotch picnic in Athena runs today and continues tomorrow. Pendleton and Weston crowds attend as Portland performers entertain. Jock Coleman performs with Lauder impersonations while Elsie Johnson, Jonnie Best, Robertson, and Smith present aword dances and reels. The program includes bagpipe pieces, vocal solos by Helen Calbreath and Alice Justin, and various dances and recitations. Evening concert at the opera house features Miss Evelene Calbreath on violin.

Pendleton Wins First Annual Athletic Meet in City

Pendleton school tops big meet with 118 1-2 points, Athena second at 79 1-2. Weston Milton and Columbia College split remaining points. Morning crowds, a dust storm, and a lively program featured a Park grounds ball game, a mile run, and a series of races. Athena performances common in Divisions B and C, with McEwen and Payne notable. The oratorical contest awarded Milton and Athena prizes, and Pendleton received a commemorative cup from the Athena Commercial Association presented by Rev. A O Hammond.

Maroons Fall to Pendleton in Hoops Hoodoo Continues

Pendleton defeated the Maroons 8 to 6 after leading early and rallying in the ninth. Lefty Smith started strong before arm trouble forced substitution by Wilson. Nelson scored for Athena. Dixon and Stone contributed key plays as Pendleton pulled away in the later innings. Weston beat Pilot Rock 10 to 6 and Athena hosts Pendleton next.
