Decoration Day Observed By Athena Veterans

Roses honor the dead as Gettysburg Post G A R leads a procession to the cemetery for grave decorations aided by the Athena band. Twelve old soldiers, including 97 year old Peter Morrison, reflect on Civil War service as music honors Emery LaHue. Current graves in Athens cemetery include 27 soldiers and widows from multiple wars. Gratitude is extended to citizens and the Athena land for flowers and support.

Song Recital At Opera House In Athena Enriches Local Arts

A Wednesday evening program at the opera house featured Mrs. Anna Selkirk Norton Miss Lola Hubbard Miss Bernice Crawford of Walla Walla and Mina Bernie Ruppe of Pendleton. The recital drew a small but appreciative audience praising each number. Norton famed locally, Ruppe a pleasing contralto who teaches here, Hubbard a skilled pianist. Also noted is the summer vacation for P J Mulkey and wife and Mrs Nellie Mulkey with plans in Rock Creek and the Willamette valley.

Alumni Banquet and Pioneer Picnic Highlight East Oregon News

Alumni Association of the Eastern Oregon State Normal School held its annual banquet in the dorm dining hall on May 28 with 50 guests. Plans for future initiative petitions were announced. Weston Pioneer Picnic drew large crowds, with A A Johns of Baker City delivering the principal speech and a strong Indigenous band entertaining attendees. An aging veteran, Mr Morrison, toured Pendleton while militia captain Ferguson promoted local company proficiency. Halley’s comet was visible with the naked eye in western skies.

Local option law upheld in circuit court ruling

Circuit Judge H J Bean upheld the local option law and found 20 or more near beer sellers guilty of violating it.
