Pendleton Chapter Receives New Material for Meeting

Mrs. Sharp visited Pendleton and received a consignment of new material with instructions. She invites the Umatilla County Chapter and all departments to attend the regular meeting next Wednesday afternoon, praising the effort to provide rooms for hospitals via Seattle.

Joseph Sheard Dies After Stroke On May 15 1018

Joseph Sheard a prominent Athena farmer died Friday evening May 17 1018 from paralysis a stroke first attacked Thursday night He was 68 and leaves a wife two sons George and Carl and two daughters Lizzie Haney and Mamie Sheard Funeral services were held Sunday at 2 30 PM at the Christian church in Athena with large attendance and the family receiving church support

Athena Girls Honor Guard Organized at Mei Home

Sunday afternoon at Mei’s home the Athena Girls Honor Guard was formed by Virginia Todd county leader of Pans Jleton. Sixteen girls attended with Mrs Hasdell chosen leader and officers named including Lonin McIntyre treasurer and Kathren Froome sergeant at arms. The group planned a May dance to raise funds and intends to sponsor a Franco child, plus sewing towels and cloths for the draft armies.

One day into the Red Cross fund drive Athena led with a $47 000 county total. Umatilla county reports many towns exceeding targets while Pendleton trails due to rating disputes. Officials note few oppose giving and many contribute above ratings despite equity concerns raised by critics.

Graduating Exercises Close School Year at Athena High

The Athena High School held graduation in the school auditorium Friday evening for nine graduates. Names include Connie W. Reker Kathren Buzan Froome and Churn Malden Haynie with others listed.
