Senator Charles A. Barrett Dies After Lingering Illness

Senator Charles A. Barrett died at his Athena home on Tuesday after months of illness. He was sixty six years, eleven months, and seven days old. Barrett, a pioneer entrepreneur and farmer, served Athena as mayor and on the city council, represented Umatilla County in the Oregon legislature, and later acted as senator for Umatilla, Morrow, and Union counties. Born in Oxford County, Maine, he moved to Umatilla County in 1876 and built a career in farming, stock dealing, and local business with his son Henry A. Barrett. He contributed to tax and revenue legislation and helped grow the state’s economy through public service and community leadership.

Meeting to Consider Athena Swimming Pool

Five Year Old Girl Dies After Scarlet Fever

The five year old daughter of Mem Cox died Tuesday after a sudden illness diagnosed as scarlet fever. Attending Dr Sharn found no traces of the disease and no extensive fever. Dr Loyden consulted but could not save the child. Funeral services were conducted on Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Baptist church, with the bereaved mother receiving community sympathy. The home remains quarantined.

Agricultural Council Meeting Set in Umatilla County
