Governor Withycombe spoke at an Ashland luncheon for a good roads meeting. He urged Oregon citizens to support a $6,000,000 road bond program, warned of a large war mobilization, and praised the state’s highway building plan as essential to economic strength.
Commencement events led by Invocation Rev. Walter Glesser and vocal performances mark the Athena High School program. Honors include the Athena Press Honor Cup for top room, plus baseball season wrap with standout batting averages and lists of students across grades noting attendance and exemptions.
Coroner Brown probes the death of Johnson W. Willard amid discovery of gold coins and certificates totaling over 10000 in his Milton area farmstead. An old vogt, several purtes, and deposits were found hidden in trunks and a closet. Willard owned an $80000 ranch. one daughter, Mrs Bil, survives in Montana.
Secretary of State Olcott stated the referendum measures invoked will not be voted on in June nor at the general election in 1918. The ballot list is limited and designed to ease public apprehension about the upcoming vote and legislative actions.

Absentees should register via local clerks or county offices with a registration card mailed from home precinct. Officials stress universal compliance and urge governors to lead registration efforts.
At a special City Council meeting in Athena, members debated a new traffic ordinance covering speed, engine idling, and curb approach. A second ordinance proposes concrete sidewalks citywide for durability and lower long term cost. The council will reference the condemned Wild Horn Creek bridge ownership and maintenance, and will order lot cleanup at Main and Second streets with city action if neglected. Weather permitting, street paving and water supply work will proceed.
McPherrin's Goats edged the Pendleton Colored Tigers 4 to 3 in a well played afternoon game. Pumbrun started for Athens, allowing two hits in four innings, while Andre and Fambron held the Tigers to four hits. Omar Stephens and Littlejohn provided fan excitement as Weston's team opens the season against Athens on Athena grounds with 60 cent admission.
