Statewide drive to enlist farm labor for nonmilitary schoolboys advances after talks with Gov. Withycombe and officials from the Department of Labor. County agents, district officers, and school authorities will recruit boys in the U.S. Bay State Working Reserve, coordinating with Portland and local agencies to file reports and assess labor needs for upcoming urban farm periods. A parallel auto crash on Main Street involved George Gerking and Victor Burke, damaging Ford and Roa vehicles. Preston-Shaffer Milling offers a 10 percent bonus to workers staying employed May to October to ensure staff stability.
Farmers hear about cooperation with the agri cultural prepared man and State Council of Defense in joint work with Federal authorities. Athens contestants excel in the Umatilla county contest with Zola Keen and Florence McLennan earning second place in high school declamation and oratoricals. Loretta Hall of Stanford won over Keen, while Genavieve Levy surpassed McLennan. Elmo Russell and Jeanette Anderson placed in Division 0.
Preparations for Baccalaureate and Commencement at Athens High School reveal the class will wear caps and gowns. Rev. Walter Glasser will deliver the Baccalaureate sermon, and Rev. Bartram Warren will give the Commencement address. The program lists hymns, choir performances, and a variety of musical selections, with events scheduled for Sunday evening May 5 and Friday evening May 14. Benjamin F.
