Masons Plan Hall Alteration and AOUW Chapter Meeting

Dolph lodge No 80 now owns the Masonic Hall after buying the inter ests of ODD Fellows and A O U W lodges for 550 each. Athena Lodge No 104 will pay rent. Dolph lodge seeks to form a new A O U W Chapter to justify the alteration for Masonic work. Friday evening meeting called for A O U W members. Meantime Thorp Bros repair shop works through fire losses and resumes full machine work. Justice Korpie dies by self inflicted gunfire at Meacham. Athena folk attend Walla Walla excursion. Bonds Run Twenty Years In Athens Water Plan

A council meeting revealed existing water bonds of 12 500 will not mature until 1915 due to a 20 year term. A resolution to issue 16 000 bonds replaces 26 000 bids, with total project costs near 18 918.81 for materials and construction, land, reservoirs, and rights of way.

Seven United States battleships competed in a high speed ocean race reported near Cape Henry. The Missouri pulled ahead by two hours, extending 126 miles in eight hours, as Alabama heads to navy yard for overhaul after the race.

Suit Against Melroy Over Contagious Hog Disease

W. Southerland sues B. F. Melroy in circuit court alleging willful spread of contagious hog disease. Plaintiff seeks 485 dollars plus to forestall a chattel mortgage foreclosure after purchasing 38 hogs and implements for 466 dollars, with 215 dollars paid by cash. Hogs infected and dying caused further losses to plaintiff, including 85 of his own hogs.

Grading Wheat Suit In Missouri Court

Thomas Akin a St Louis grain merchant filed suit in circuit court against Missouri board of railroads and warehouse commissioners Frederick H Tedford and the Merchants Exchange to restore No 2 red winter wheat grading. He says he bought hundreds of thousands of No 2 red winter wheat deliverable this month and cites wheat from Missouri Illinois Indiana Michigan and Wisconsin as mostly red winter. He contrasts red Russian wheat grown on the Pacific coast selling for less than No 2 red winter. Separately Echo held a large farmers basket picnic drawing visitors from Pendleton La Grande Portland and nearby areas with over 2000 served at a dinner but crowd outgrew the dining space.
