Oklahoma reports a tornado striking Snyder killing or injuring hundreds while destroying nearly every building. communications are down and only partial data from nearby Hobart and Chickasaw. An earlier Harrisburg incident involved a broken freight hose causing fatalities and fire on a separate line.
A letter from Tom Richardson urges Athena residents to attend the joint Good Roads Association and Oregon Development League meeting in Pendleton. Col. Judson backs a strong Athena delegation to win stopover privileges, Lewis and Clark tickets, and plans to locate people in the area.
Leroy Irven Dixon, a San Juan division hero of the Denver and Rio Grande railway, will receive a funded education. The La Plata county rancher's son will study in top schools, progressing from grammar to preparatory, then a university. In 1904 at age 12 he warned of a rockslide, stopping a train 200 feet away with a red bandana signal, earning admiration but declining a hat fund.
T L Terhune announces via advertisement in today's Press that he will engage in the lumber and building material trade. His yard sits on Hunt Avenue near his residence as he expands to a stock ready for contracting and building work. It notes expected attendance by state leaders at a Good Roads and Development League convention in Pendleton May 15 and 16 with many invitations accepted.
Dr H Bingham leases Bing ham Springs resort to M E Foley a Tacoma hotel man. Foley will remove sanitarium features, cater to excursionists and campers, and aim to make it the leading resort in Umatilla county. Dr Bingham retires to spend summer at Walla Walla and in the mountains. Foley leaves for Portland to arrange new fixtures and supplies before opening season.
East Oregonian reports the Umatilla County Commissioners contracted with Clark and Buchanan of Portland to expert all county offices. The audit will cover clerks sheriffs assessors recorders treasurers and school superintendents dating back as far as feasible. The process starts next Monday and aims to set a regular practice for future examinations.
George Bannister has brought phonograph concerts to school rooms for the children. Tonight in Epworth Hall at the M E church the Epworth League hosts its first ice cream social of the season with tempting refreshments. Attend for a pleasant evening.
The Umatilla county exhibit at the Lewis and Clark fair will feature a daily and weekly file of every county paper at the agricultural building booth. Editors are asked to provide regular copies to showcase county resources, aiding a first class display.
L Spencer awards the repair contract for the opera house to T. Lemoe. Terhune bid F588 but was not accepted, with the award noting the scope excludes ing of the building.
Barber firm owners Barber, Knob, and Willaby sold the business and fixtures to A. J. Parker and Elmer Lane who have moved from California. Lane will run Keen Shop. Parker remains in charge of the old stand. Present plan maintains one chair at Keen and two at Parker. In Pine Creek ranch incident Henry Barrett had a wagon overturning on a hill injuring him with cuts and bruises.
The fleet shipment of wheat from Athena was completed yesterday when David Taylor moved three carloads to Tacoma. The grain, in storage, was reportedly sold at an unspecified price and remains a local asset in Tacoma.
