Opera House Fire Destroys Tharp Shop in Athena

A major blaze in Athena destroyed Tharp Bros machine shop and severely damaged the opera house, with losses estimated near six thousand dollars. Firefighters faced a perilous attic blaze due to construction, and no insurance covered the buildings. The Tharp shop and grain storage burned, while Spencer's blacksmith shop suffered substantial loss.

Farmer killed by train at Spokane station

Henry Tiptke a farmer from near Odessa Washington was killed early today at the Northern Pacific station in Spokane while attempting to board the North Coast Limited. He jumped for the drawhead of an approaching car, fell, and was crushed by the train. he died at once. His body was taken to a local undertaker.

Pendleton May 4 The Umatilla county court added 200 to the 500 previously set aside to collect install and maintain the agricultural exhibit at the Lewis and Clark fair. Officials plan a vigorous push to present a creditable county booth by opening date and hope to add programs through the season, aiming for a premier agricultural display by mid summer.

Athena City approves pipeline right of way with consent

The city of Athena will not condemn a right of way for a pipeline after George Lienallen understood the papers and consented to signing. He had verbally allowed land entry for the city to construct and maintain the pipeline, and after explanation he agreed to grant the right for entry rather than deeding land.

Death of Fred W. Waite

Fred W. Waite, well known to Athens sportsmen and coast businessmen as a hardware salesman, died in a Portland hospital Tuesday evening from complications after an operation to relieve a secretion in the mastoid region behind the right ear. He became totally blind and somewhat paralyzed after the procedure. Returning from the road, he served as manager of the Hotel Pendleton. He leaves three young children, the eldest three, and his wife and mother died 19 months earlier after a lingering illness.

Evangelist Rev M Martin Heads to Seattle After Salem Meetings

Rev M Martin the evangelist who led the Christian church revival in spring 1904 passed through en route to Salem for a new series of meetings before moving to Seattle to reside. He was with his wife and daughter after closing a successful run at New Albany Indiana and is slated for evangelical appointments next year. Mrs Martin will practice medicine in Seattle. Supreme Court cases heard Wednesday include Rice v Wallowa County and McCrary v Biggar both from Athena and a divorce case Taylor v Taylor with nationwide attention. The docket also includes a B N N case against Umatilla County argued yesterday.
