The collector of internal revenue enforces a May 1 ruling banning sale or gift of empty stamped cigar boxes until the stamp is destroyed. Revenue officers may destroy empty boxes. penalties apply to selling giving or receiving empty branded boxes, not possession of boxed cigars.
Judge Bean ordered an election in North Milton South Milton and Valley precincts for June 5 to decide the liquor issue. The petition for the vote was filed with the county court several weeks ago by residents of the three precincts.
At the monthly meeting the city council authorized condemnation to secure title for a pipeline across George T Lienallen land after he refused to sign written rights though verbally permitting. other nearby landowners David Taylor EK Dudley and Robert Coppock signed. The recorder was instructed to advertise bids for bond sales and pipe supplies for the water system.
Ernest Hickman, about 36, was killed by City Marshal William Lucey in the Woods saloon after an insult claim. City Recorder Haight was wounded as Lucey fired, crowds threatened lynching, and Sheriff Ambrow moved Lucey to Prairie Diggings mine to avert violence. Hickman’s family in Oregon City.
A Pendleton meeting of the Commercial association discussed the Oregon Good Roads convention to be held May 15 and 16 in Pendleton. Attendees expected include W R Richardson president of the National Good Roads association Judge Scott of Salem and possibly Tom Richardson of the Oregon Development league to share expertise on highway building.
Fred Waite the renowned gun expert lies in a Portland hospital in critical condition. Reports say he has partial consciousness and can speak to his mother but remains totally blind. Doctors fear sight may not return, though a slim chance of recovery remains according to some observers.
Milo Ransom departed Weston on Tuesday bound for Kohokka Missouri to join his sister and her children and begin the rest of his days in retirement. After four decades in Weston he called the goodbye a bitter pill and many friends in Umintilla county will miss the rugged veteran as he left the familiar streets for the depot.

The state supreme court convened in Pendleton for a session starting yesterday. A major case on the docket is Moraes Taylor, respondent, versus Isabella Taylor, appellant, with attorneys W. M. and Jobo McCoort, James A. involved.
Oregon lawmakers enact Senate 195 changing fee allocation in Umatilla County. Sheriff now keeps civil case and mileage fees rather than sending them to the county treasurer. The measure repeals conflicting acts and becomes general law. Also outlines 1905 game licensing rules and hunting seasons across counties.
The April crop report by Milton Evans shows a large area of spring sown wheat 50 percent above normal. Favorable weather supports strong growth. February freeze caused some damage but not serious. Winter wheat and rye in good condition. meadow lands and spring pasture rated high. spring plowing 7 percent complete.
A devastating tornado swept through Laredo Texas late Saturday night killing sixteen people and injuring many others. Reports suggest possible additional fatalities outside Laredo but lack confirmation. Local property damage described as extensive and widespread.
