The Athena High School holds a baccalaureate in the Christian Church Sunday May 6 at 7 30 p m officiated by Dr E T Allen of Whitman College with hymns anthems scripture and announcements The commencement Friday May 11 at 5 p m features Judge Stephen A Lowell of Pendleton as speaker Music by the Athena orchestra The junior banquet for seniors and faculty followed in the domestic science room with peach and orchid decor an ocean voyage centerpiece and toasts from Alberta Chariton Clifford Wood Mildred Bateman Ray Johnston Weldon Bell and Dorothy Geissel A junior mothers run dinner and orthophonic Victrola music by Pendleton Music Co.

Thompson seeks national delegate seat in Republican bid

W L Thompson, Portland banker and salmon businessman with Eastern Oregon roots, announces candidacy for delegate to the Republican national convention. He forecasts strong support from Umatilla County and eastern central Oregon, citing his long party involvement and local farming loans via the Pacific Coast Joint Stock Land Bank. District No 17 Victorious at Helix Sectional Meet

District No 17 athletes Robert and Barbara Lee led a strong showing at the Helix Sectional Track Meet on April 21 with Barbara winning the girls twenty five yard dash and baseball throw and tying in A class with a Helix girl in D class. Robert captured first in broad jump and placed in other events including second in the fifty yard dash and high jump. The Lees later represented their school at the Annual County Meet earning a large schoolroom flag award from Pendleton schools.

Cinders Fire Destroys No Cars In Yard

A gondola flat car loaded with cinders in Union Pacific yards caught fire from hot binders but was extinguished without an alarm. The car, brought from Reith by a passing freight and switched in, was to be used for ballasting.

Campfire Girls Hike Wild Horse Creek in Rustic Camp Style

Fourteen Wauna Campfire girls with guardians Hilda Dickenson and Mrs. W. H. LeRoy hiked Wild Horse Creek Saturday morning. They prepared bread over campfires built with stones for drying pans.

Construction Work On Pool Progressing

The Legion swimming pool project, led by McLeod of Walla Walla, has poured concrete retaining walls and will remove forms soon. After surfacing the bottom with concrete, concrete walks around the pool and the showers and dressing room will be installed. Excavation for water pipes from city mains is underway to complete plumbing. the city main is being tapped near the bridge at the city park.

J. W. Pinkerton Loses Sight in Right Eye

A steel fragment pierced J. W. Pinkerton’s right eye at his farm while removing a bolt with a punch. Doctors in Spokane removed the splinter by magnet but the eye’s sight is lost. The family car ride back to Walla Walla included a serious arm cut for Mrs. Pinkerton.

Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Dudley visited relatives near Dayton in the early week as a spinal meningitis outbreak claims four adult lives in two weeks with a fifth patient in critical condition in the area.

Study Club Plans Oregon Focus Year After Break

Last Wheat Shipped From Farmers Grain Elevator

The final shipment of wheat from Farmers Grain Elevator completes the 1927 crop storage. In March and April the elevator shipped 26 warloads to Kansas City and St Louis, yielding prices from $1.20 to $1.45 per bushel for growers.

Water Mains Replacement Delivery in City

Scouts Visit New Walla Walla River Camp Plans

Local scouts toured a new campsite up the Walla Walla river and praised plans for a cabin to be built when weather allows. A joint hike for scouts and camp fire girls is planned soon with the boys hosting and organizing provisions.
