Manslaughter verdict in Grover Martin case near Freewater

Grover Martin is found guilty of manslaughter in the killing of O. N. Preston near Freewater on May 18. The jury deliberated five and a half hours, a motion for a new trial will be made, and Martin was escorted from the court after verdict. Evidence included testimony from Minnie Preston, Dr. Fulton, and Mary Clark, with defense noting illegitimate relations and threats preceding the incident.

Injured mill worker in accident at Fletcher Saw Mill

Weston June 23 Lafe Yarber an employee at the Fletcher Saw Mill east of town lies at a local hotel in maimed condition after an accident yesterday afternoon. While near the carriage moving logs toward the saws he was caught between the carriage and a log suffering painful leg and body injuries. Attending physicians report he is resting as well as could be expected with indications of recovery.

Testimony from A. B. Tanner links Mitchell & Tanner to Frederick Kribs in expediting timber patent claims. Tanner says Mitchell received half the retainers and produced letters showing efforts to push claims. He also admits erasing Pater claims from the books to hide ties to the firm during last autumn's land fraud trials.

Smallpox at Dayton Claims two deaths and more infections

Florence Neal who recently brought smallpox to the Dunning home near Dayton from Asotin county had contracted the disease while working at a hotel and had almost recovered. On Sunday night Etta Miller, who caught the disease from Miss Neal, died. Miss Miller's half brother John Dunning may recover, but Bamney Dunning is expected to die at any moment.

City Signs Oil Contract for Street Oiling Project

Walla Walla city council closed a contract with Pacific Paving for two carloads of crude petroleum to oil the streets as an experiment. The Seattle oil purchase was wired and should be on site within ten days. The price per front foot was not public, but is described as not expensive.

Judge Robert Bakin was elected to the La Grande school district over J H Leighman by 198 to 91. The Mormon slate made its first bid to gain a representative on the local school board, drawing sharp opposition and charges of attempted influence.

Opera House Contract Awarded for Walla Walla

The contract to build an opera house in Walla Walla was let yesterday to J B Randall of Seattle for 30000. Construction starts at once and the building will be ready for occupancy by September 15 when the theatrical season opens. Karl Dudley returned from Portland where he and other Oregon Agricultural College students camped for a week at the exposition grounds. He will spend the summer vacation at home.
