Intermittent showers and a cloudburst sweep the region with heavy rain from Athena to The Dalles and eastern Washington. Crops gain moisture, potato plantings welcomed rain, while some areas report flood damage and orchard losses.
Ninety Whitman seniors received degrees during the second annual commencement held Monday afternoon in the college amphitheatre. The procession was led by Marshal Edward Morgan of Palo Alto and included alumni, faculty, the board of overseers, the board of trustees, and President Dr. B. L. Penrose.
In Pendleton on Monday Miss Delia Rush a former local teacher defeated druggist M L Thompson for the school board. The vote total was nearly the largest ever polled in a Pendleton school election with one notable exception.
More than 650 students received degrees at the University of Oregon commencement on Monday. The exercises culminated in a processional of graduates in scholarly robes.
Mrs. Ernest Bell died after a Caesarean operation at a Seattle hospital while giving birth to a daughter who survives. She was formerly Leota Wagner a teacher in Athena schools. She leaves her husband a young daughter her parents Mr and Mrs BE Wagner of Pasadena Calif two brothers Stanley and Erby two sisters Seatta and Inez. Funeral services were held at Bombay's funeral parlor Pendleton with burial in Olney cemetery.
The 1931 Legion convention commission announces a coast stopover service for visitors to the state convention August 6 7 and 8. Corvallis chamber of commerce will manage reservations for cottages cabins hotels or camping along the coast highway Waldport to Sea side. Guests can depart Corvallis late afternoon and have accommodations waiting with free liaison by telephone and telegraph. ferry fees at Waldport and Newport have been discontinued on the Waldport Newport Loop.
Robert Gordon Duncan 60, known as the Oregon Wildcat, began serving a penalty at 11:15 a m Wednesday for obscene radio language used in a year long series of attacks on businessmen tied to a campaign against chain stores. He was moved to Multnomah county jail after Judge James A Fee denied parole.
Blue mountains observers say the forestry department may start work on the Tollgate Elgin road this year. The road will not be finished, but a start will be made. Next summer the Weston Tollgate gap may be completed, but this year motorists must use the old dirt road.
Motorists enjoying a weekend at Wallowa Lake report good fishing for yanks. Fishermen use periwinkles salmon eggs and worms with still fishing from row boats. Blue fish of 8 to 10 inches yield red meat described as a salmon trout delicacy and run about a month each year.
Idaho state sheep commission reports May bounty totals show 1,445 coyotes killed at an average $5 each amounting to $6,897. Hunters also killed 20 wildcats while using shovels, guns, and traps.
Announcement states that storage facilities of the Walla Walla Farmers agency at Walla Walla and Dixie will be bought by the new Farmers National Warehouse corporation.
A light cherry crop yields only a 25 carload shipment from Milton-Freewater this season, far below the 100 carloads typical in prior years. Growers report limited yields and cautious market demand as fruit quality remains variable.

State Fire Marshal A H Averill cautions that sale or use of firecrackers over two and a half inches long and five eighths inch in diameter is illegal statewide. Pendleton crowds gear up for the Third Annual American Legion water regatta at McKay Lake on June 20 and 21. Entries include Arthur Peck of Klamath Falls driving Klamath Queen, Laurence Peckett of Spokane in Flaming Mammie, Joe Pedicord in Peddy Boy Jr, Fritz Helphery in Peddy Boy Jr, Glen Collins of Spokane in Little Ceasar, Bob Tillotson of Boise in Betty Korner, W B Earscourt of Spokane in Skip, and Harold McCarty in Flying Cloud 11. McCarty, famed in the Boise Valley, aims to push fast in Northwest competition. Logs, floats, and a log roll contest are setup as the event attracts record interest and a Regatta dance at Happy Canyon on Saturday.
The first Pendleton-Portland round trip under Pendleton Airways Inc. used a four place Ryan plane. Three passengers rode including Mayor Lewis of Pendleton.

A R Shumway of Milton Oregon becomes president of North Pacific Grain Growers Inc defeating F J Wilmer of Rosalia Washington. The vote surprised stockholders but directors approved the direct marketing plan with local units and Farmers National Grain Corp. elected officers include Victor R Hyslop as vice president and Albert C Adams as treasurer. Directors re elected include Wilmer Sutton Dorman Hyslop Lineham McAllister Sweazey with O T Cornwall stepping down.
At the annual District No 29 meeting Mrs Lenna Read was re elected to the board of directors. J P Kershaw was re elected school clerk. Budget voting by ballot. Bonded indebtedness reduced to 7000 with $2000 bonds paid. retirements at $2000 per year, freeing the district in about three and a half years from bonded debt tied to the $32,000 building.
Through concerted efforts of post masters in towns between Pendleton and Walla Walla the post office department has given better mail service. Mail now arrives in Athena at 7 50 a m by Union Pacific motor stage from Pendleton, replacing the previous train delivery around 11 a m. Earlier mail from Walla Walla arrived by motor stage at 8 a m.
The fraternal order of Eagles holds its annual state convention in Pendleton starting yesterday and continuing today and tomorrow. Mayor George Lewis opened with a welcoming address, followed by E. B. Aldrich Col. J. H. Raley and Harold J. Warner. A banquet by the ladies auxiliary and a dance follow this evening.
R L Wilson manager of Farmers Grain Elevator Co of Athena and Joseph Cannon represented Athena at the North Pacific Grain Growers Inc meeting in Spokane on Monday. Wilson said reports were read and locals will soon receive copies.
The Oregon Industrial Accident Commission reports more than 140000 workmen are affected by the compensation law. About 19000 employers in the state operate under the act and the employer contributes six percent of the accident fund.
Isaac Dyer and Miss Lenore Dyer were married at the bride’s parents’ home in Hermiston. An informal reception followed. The couple will reside near Pilot Rock where Mr. Isaac is engaged in farming.
With cooler temperatures and rain showers, attendance at the Legion pool in City Park was light early in the week. Warmer days ahead could boost turnout as temperatures rise.
The Oregon governor appoints Max Gehlhar to direct a five division department merging markets and standards. The plan reduces chiefs to four with two more to be named, and moves crop news to Corvallis. Consolidation saves about 7300 dollars yearly and folds 12 current state functions into the new department.
Kent Shoemaker head of the automobile examiners license bureau names nine examiners. New driver and chauffeur license applicants must be examined after July 1. Law requires chauffeurs to renew licenses though current holders need not renew now. renewal due within three years. Henry Lizear oversees the district from Pendton headquarters.
Beginning at midnight Saturday three shifts of men will build a grain elevator at Milton adjacent to the Milton Box factory. Erection by C G McNichols for the Farmers' National Grain Corp with completion set for July 5. Capacity 80 000 bushels and cost over 25000 dollars. Local manager expected to be H F Murray Freewater.
Elaborate ceremonies were planned for the unveiling of the Joseph memorial monument on Clatsop Plains Tuesday. Companies of the 186th and 162d Infantry of the Oregon National Guard joined with the state to honor the memory of the late Senator George W. Joseph.
