A Sunday afternoon picnic and swim at Thorn Hollow drew a group of Adams residents including Mr. and Mrs. John Spencer Mr. and Mrs. Grant Marquis Mr. and Mrs. 8 C Porter and family Mr. and Mrs. F M Whiteley and granddaughter Ada Sorenson Miss Mildred McCollum Thea and Hilda La Fave and Julia and Bernice Wallan among others.
Pendleton acquires an 80 acre tract for a new airport and leases land owned by Mrs. Sabina Morton. Immediate improvements costing 3000 dollars will be rushed to completion to advance the project.
The 42nd annual Eastern Star convention opened in the Masonic Temple as Kohler Betts and Mrs Ione Cresswell attend from Dolph Lodge No 80 and McKen n Chapter. Dr C C Hagmeier opened the grand lodge communications and travel was presented by Maritime Lodge replica of Washington trowel. More than 150 chapters represented. Carrie Jackson presided as Worthy Grand Matron.

Three test plots of sugar beets show strong signs of top currying as a minute hopper insect proliferates this year. Hay fields also report severe field mouse infestation after an open winter.
Glenn Dudley and John Pinkerton delivered three bean harvester combines to growers in Kendrick Idaho last week. The units were loaded at Athena from Eickhoff Products equipment, a supplier active in bean growing for two seasons. All machinery from the company stored here is being disposed of.

A four room cottage in North Milton was gutted by a fire of undetermined origin Tuesday afternoon before detection. The ceiling and interior walls in three rooms were destroyed and smoke poured from doors, windows, and the roof as the fire was first noticed.
Special dispatch from Sutter Creek California says gold has been struck on the Lagomarsino brothers Battle Mountain placer claim on Sutter Creek two miles north of Volcano. Three car loads of ore valued at 600 dollars have been taken out along with two nuggets valued at 200 dollars.
Word from Portland says E A Dudley, patient at Good Samaritan hospital, continues to improve and will soon leave for apartments at 274 North 21st Street.

Watermasters and foresters report acute irrigation strain in the Blue Mountain range due to recent flood impacts and light precipitation. Mill Creek supplies most irrigation near Walla Walla but stream bed scouring accelerates water loss. Umatilla River and tributaries are at mid-summer levels, risking springs and stock watering for cattle and sheep in the Umatilla reserve.
Former M. E. Church Pastor Rev. and Mrs. C. W. Geissler were in Athena on Monday from Starbuck Washington. Rev. Geissler served as pastor of the local Methodist Episcopal church in Athena and Mrs. Geissler was the widow of John Smith, a longtime Athena resident.
Raymond Freese an Athena high school boy employed on the Claud Dickenson place north of Athena suffered a deep gash when he fell on a hoe. Dr McKinney set four stitches in the palm to close the wound.
William W. Goff, 58, owner of Goff Insurance Co of Walla Walls and longtime tenant of the Elks building, was found dead with a bullet wound in his chest. Deputy Chamberlain believes the death to be self-inflicted.
Senator C. C. Dill of Washington, a Democrat, returns from Europe and says the world asks when a boom will start in America. He blames Hoover for no plan and lack of confidence and endorses Franklin D. Roosevelt as the needed constructive, progressive administration. Dill toured Europe by air, studying radio policy in England, France, Germany, Belgium, Denmark and Sweden.
Weston leaders announce a two day pioneers reunion and banquet for June 12 and 13. The Mac Hi quartette headlines Friday with Mae Hi young singers Clark Wheeler and others. the Pendleton trio performs Saturday. Banquet by Weston Methodist Woman's Missionary Society. Committee chaired by Mabel Nelson Chastain with Chas Pinkerton and Roy Ritner.
A 15 man crew completes the replacement of the old wooden flume damaged by spring flood. A new flume is laid in nearly the same location as the previous structure, keeping many workers employed.
Pendleton Grain Growers, Inc. approved an 8 percent cash dividend on all subscribed stock at a Monday night meeting. Officers were re-elected, Charles Cook was named manager for another year, and the year ending June 1 yielded a net profit near $500.
John H. Hogan of Salem, a pool hall operator, becomes Marion county’s first defendant under the new drunken driving law after a Saturday arrest. Bail was set at $100.
Arrangements have been completed for the annual outboard motor boat regatta to be staged at McKay Lake on June 20 and 21. Officials announced a full schedule of heats, safety rules, and prize events for local competitors.
Mrs. E J Pinkerton, widow of Henry Pinkerton, died following an appendicitis operation in Portland Saturday, June 6, at age 74. She had been visiting relatives at Echo and planned to visit Weston and others after. Survived by sons Frank Ely and Walter Ely and daughter Ada Costello, with funeral attended by Fred and Charles Pinkerton spouses.
The University of Oregon summer sessions open June 22 in Eugene and at the Portland center in Lincoln high school. Six weeks of studies follow with about 318 courses taught by some 160 professors. A Hawaii cruise and a later Alaska trip are planned alongside the Eugene and Portland programs.
Lieutenant Jack Winn of Fort Lewis Washington visited his uncle F LeGrow last week with his wife. He was en route to Boise Idaho to play for the Fort Lewis polo team in the Northwest polo tournament. Fort Lewis players own fine polo ponies including one valued at 1500 dollars.
The Pendleton Oregon National Guard company left Monday night under Lieutenant Meril Boyer for Camp Clatsop. The group will join other units to gain real army camp life experience and take part in military maneuvers. New member Orel Michener of Athena joined the Pendleton company for the trip.
Twenty two Washington counties along the Northern Pacific railway were enjoined from selling delinquency certificates on the railroad property for unpaid 1925 taxes. A temporary injunction had been issued a week earlier and Judge Stanley Webster made the injunction permanent at the hearing.
Twenty five Walla Walla association golfers faced a tough course and hot sun at Pilot Rock Sunday and lost by 24 points with a 34 to 31 score. A return tournament may be held in Walla Walla.
Ray Martin a 30 year old escapee from the Yakima county jail was caught by four deputy sheriffs as he moved along with a cane disguised as an elderly man.
A blaze of unknown origin damaged the York Dell residence on Third street Saturday evening. The fire, starting in an enclosed back porch, spread to the kitchen and roof, with about $1000 in damage and restoration underway as firefighters battled the flames aided by a faulty hydrant delaying water flow.
A trace of rain fell in Athe na and vicinity on Tuesday with only showers elsewhere in the county. Cooler temperatures and moisture slowed the heat that withered crops and hastened grain maturity in light land areas. The anticipated June rain remains hoped for as Weston picnic days approach.

A Dayton truck driver identified as Clint Titus, about 40, was decapitated when a large freight truck collided with his small vehicle on the Inland Empire highway four miles south of Waitsburg on Wednesday afternoon. Two Portland men, M. B. Brown, 65, and Lewis E. Hafter, 32, riding in the freight truck, were injured, one seriously.

Former Central Bank of Toppenish vice president H. B. Miller, index of embezzlement, was released after posting a $10,000 bond just hours after eluding a deputy sheriff during a home surveillance operation. He died by his own hand in a second attempt, leaving $195,000 life insurance with the bank as beneficiary.
Prize fighter Leo Lomski of Aberdeen was injured Tuesday when his car left the highway near a rock, skidded and overturned in a ditch en route to Seattle. He suffered a cut on his left wrist a cut on his left elbow and a wrenched neck.

Gerald Young an 11 year old of Roseburg was seriously injured when an outlaw horse charged into a barn and trampled him as he helped his father E G Young Oakland banker stock raiser drive the horses into a corral. The father narrowly drove the animal off.
