Budget cuts outlined by Meier target Oregon agencies
Governor Julius L. Meier announced a proposed $2 million reduction in the next state budget compared with the current session. The savings plan includes abolishing the state market agent position, cutting rentals, and reorganizing the Department of Agriculture into a new statewide agency effective July 1, with further economies to come later in the year. Charles T. Early, head of the Industrial Accident Commission, said $200,000 would be saved this biennium, noting staff cuts and salary revisions already reduced payroll from 147 to 121. The commission expects an additional $80,000 in savings through further efficiency measures.

Fred Pinkerton has word that his step mother Mrs. E. J. Pinkerton is seriously ill at Good Samaritan hospital in Portland after an appendicitis operation. Mrs. Pinkerton, who lives with her daughter Ada Costello, had visited Athena and was en route here for a visit when illness struck and she had to return to Portland.

Mother of Ora Shigley Killed in Auto Accident
Mrs. Dora Shigley aged 61, mother of Ora Shigley, was killed near Lorimer Iowa on May 28 when the car she rode in with cousin Clark Babbs was struck by a Chicago Great Western train at a grade crossing. Babbs also died. Funeral services for Mrs. Shigley were held at Lorimor. She left a son Ora Shigley of Athena and three grandchildren.

Ada Wallace Unruh 78 a prominent figure in the Women’s Christian Temperance Union in Oregon died at her Portland home. Born December 3 1853 in Valparaiso Indiana she moved to Oregon in 1887 and led WCTU at state and national levels including a key role in funding the Children’s Farm Home at Corvallis.
