Freewater Open Town Case Opens Local Option Question

In Freewater the local option law is challenged as invalid due to improper petition recording. Judge Ellis acquits Geo Treland, saying the North Milton district subdivision petition was not properly filed, leaving Freewater open to saloons like Pilot Rock. Also in Salem a new irrigation bill is planned and figures on normal schools funding and graduate costs are noted.

Saloon Keeper Patros Arrested for Coal Theft

John Patros who runs a saloon near the O R and N depot to Walla Walla was arrested in the police court and fined 40 dollars for stealing coal from the railroad company. Detective Fitzgerald and Officer Casey assisted in laying the charge, Patros confessed and paid the fine.

Indictments Target Portland Legal Figures in Perjury Case

Federal grand jury indicts Judge Albert H. Tanner for perjury allegedly spoken before the panel in January regarding Senator John H. Mitchell and land speculator Frederick A. Kiubs. Additional counts name Hamilton Hendricks, George O. Brownell, Henry Meldrum, George Waggoner, David Kinnair, Rufus Moore, John Hamaker, and Frank Van Winkle for conspiracy or related offenses.

Little Walla Walla Irrigation District Law Passed

The Pierce bill creating the Little Walla Walla Irrigation District near Freewater in Umatilla county becomes law. The measure mirrors municipal powers to levy and use funds for irrigation. The house also passed the Jayne local option bill with a 40 percent petition rule and precinct strictness, amid a record legislative crowd. The state will adjourn Feb 17 with no special session.

Vert Made Receiver of Golconda Mining Company

John Vert longtime confidential man at First National Bank of Pendleton has been appointed receiver of Golconda Consolidated Mining Co by Judge Eakin and now manages the property. Creditors led by the bank, with a $10 000 mortgage held by J A Howard and others, sought a receiver earlier after foreclosure suit filed in circuit court and federal court injunction on sale. Alexander Prussing of Chicago represented minority stockholders.
