Oregon Tax Law Summary Appeals for Timely Payment

Tax rules outline rebates for payments by March 15 and no penalties through early April. Delinquency after the first Monday in April triggers 10 percent penalty and 12 percent annual interest. Half-payments may extend to October with further penalties and interest. Personal property tax rules and sheriff sales of lands for nonpayment proceed after May 1 and March 1 of the following year, with deeds issued and three-year redemption.

Judge Tanner pleads guilty in Mitchell land claims case

In Portland on February 12 Judge A H Tanner admitted perjury before a federal grand jury tied to Senator John H Mitchell. Government evidence showed he lied about partnership fees and Mitchell’s role. Tanner Jr and Harry Robertson testified, and a letter from Mitchell outlined a defense plan. Bank Robbers Captured in Lebanon Bank Hold Up Case

Portland dispatch reports D Darling Che ney Smith George Culver and Tom Donn arrested by Sheriff Word and four deputies on the Lebanon bank robbery charge. Two other gang members fled and may be in Seattle. Darling attended Sunday school with children in South Portland and Dunn was a former house mover. Smith and Culver are described as gamblers.

Citizens denounce the Portland city board of education for secret meetings where public business and appropriations are discussed. The open meeting rule is urged, arguing past secrecy should not justify future star chamber sessions.

Scarlet Fever Cases Reported in Pendleton

Four new scarlet fever cases are reported today in Pendleton with most mild in type. Previously reported patients show recovery or imminent recovery. City recorder’s office notes on record cases, and several unrecorded cases are suspected.

Remonstrance Sent Over Pierce Bill For District Incorporation

Pendleton February 13 Saturday remonstrance to Senator Pierce s bill to incorporate the Little Walla Walla irrigation district was sent to the Valencia county delegation at Salem. It was signed by 35 property owners while the petition for the law had 27 signers. Three petition signees who changed views after explanation signed the remonstrance.

Missouri Squirms in Cold Wave

In Kansas City Missouri the severe cold spell began January 1 and has kept temperatures below freezing. The peak chill hit 22 degrees below zero at 6 am, breaking the 1800 February 12 record of 21 below. Fifteen inches of new snow cover the ground under a clear sky.

Umatilla Teachers Protest Bills Favoring Equal Privileges

The East Oregonian notes a protest by Umatilla County teachers against House bill No 841 that would favor normal graduates in hiring over non graduates. A remonstrance was drafted with committee members Harry Uber T. C. Salt and S. E. Carr, arguing the measure would harm experienced teachers and worsen salaries. Pendleton Feb 10 1905. Local Teacher Institute to Meet at Athena Public School

A local teachers institute will convene next Saturday afternoon at Athena public school. County Superintendent Frank K. Welles has finalized the program including talks on employing a teacher, school legislation, and an educational exhibit at the Lewis and Clark Exposition. B. Conklin and T. C. Salt are among speakers with E. H. Anderson and G. W. Phelps noted in related dispatches. Phelps appoints G. E. Noteon as deputy in Morrow County as he relocates to Pendleton on March 1 due to workload.
